A Union solider named Townsend (probably from Massachusetts) writes to his brother from occupied Baton Rouge, Louisiana, describing the city, Union officers and soldiers encamped there, picket duty and drill, his family, and vague news of the Battle of Fredericksburg ("a great battle...fought on the Rappahannock"). Mss. 3684.
