River lock worker (1931-1961) and resident of Plaquemine, Louisiana. Rivet recalls drownings at the Plaquemine locks on the Mississippi River, the sinking of the steamboat Andes, and his work in the mechanical operation of moving boats through the locks. His scrapbook documents his failed attempt to enlist in the U.S. Army at the beginning of World War I; his service with the American Red Cross in Europe; his travels in Great Britain, France, Russia, Poland, Gibraltar, Malta, and Turkey; and atrocities during the Russian Revolution. Letter from Willaim Weeks Hall praises the job the military is doing during the war (presumably World War II) and the country's gratitude toward the soldiers. Postcards are of Baton Rouge, LSU, and New Orleans buildings and include, among others, images of the State Capitol and grounds, Huey Long pool at LSU, North Boulevard, the French House, general campus scenes (old and new campus), Charity Hospital, and the interior of the Roosevelt Hotel. Collection includes a series of letters written from Max Rosenbaum to his son, Bert Rosenbaum, who was in Europe serving in the United States Army during World War II. The collection is also comprised of photographs of Ruth (Elgutter) Rosenbaum's German-Jewish immigrant family. Mss. 4878.
  • Samuelson, Hyman, 1919- . Papers, 1936-2007. 3 linear ft. Location: X:16-18. Correspondence, diaries, personal narratives, military records, photographs, and illustrations reflect the life of a young Jewish man while attending Louisiana State University and his military experiences while serving in New Guinea in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 96th Battalion. They relate his academic and social activities in college and difficulties encountered as part of an engineering regiment of African American troops. Samuelson discusses military bureaucracy, troop morale, discipline, engineering projects, and tropical diseases. Throughout the diaries, he tells of his personal growth and his interpersonal relationships, especially with Dora Reiner. He also refers to damaged caused by a severe storm in the Pacific, probably Typhoon Helen. Mss. 4934.

Eva Scott was an owner of The Shades Plantation in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. She lived on the plantation with her aunt, Kate Scott. Papers include correspondence (1866-1877) written to Bettie Gordon Scott and family papers (1892-1900). Papers (1900-1959) include correspondence of Eva and Kate Scott. Cards and letters of Lyle Saxon and Sherwood Anderson are included. Business papers (1853-1941) pertain to the administration of The Shades Plantation. Manuscript volumes include 5 ledgers (1889-1913) recording supplies and wages paid to hired laborers. This collection consists of 710 lantern slides contains series covering World War I, Ireland, Politicians, Life, and a few entertainment series such as Puss and Boots, Reynaud the Fox, and St. George and the Dragon and a series of long, hand-painted "story" slides.
