Plantation built by Samuel Fagot of St. James Parish, Louisiana, in the 1840s; it produced sugar cane and was known as Constancia Plantation prior to 1864. The plantation store operated circa 1875-1914. Collection includes business records, correspondence, slave and free labor records, and plantation store records and scrip. Cochran, a merchandise broker and dealer in oils, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Letters to Van Lear's brother Charles, a farmer in Virginia. Van Lear describes his journey by train from Virginia to Arkansas; the people, social customs, and climate of Little Rock; his daily office routine and duties in his uncle's business; occasional hunting trips in the area; his relationship with his relatives; and the eyestrain from which he frequently suffers. James Alexander Ventress married Sallie Mathews of Greenwood plantation, West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, where these account books were found.. Ledgers contain accounts for Caledonia, Lake Home, and Longwood plantations of Pointe Coupee Parish. The flyleaves of both volumes bear the inscription "Ventress Brothers, Pointe Coupee Property, Ventress and Fordeche Post Office, "Caledonia," "Lake Home," "Longwood," Interior of Island, etc., Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana." The papers contain accounts, notes requesting medical visits, and printed material. Printed material includes several newspaper clippings on politics, church news and remedies for livestock diseases (undated). Account books, v. 1 (1859-1869, 1884-1886) and v. 2 (1870-1905) list accounts with patients for medical visits and medicine dispensed. The first volume contains entries for medical visits to slaves prior to the end of the Civil War. There is a notation on page 83 of v. 1 of a payment made with Confederate currency. This volume also has newspaper clippings relating to poetry, obituaries and personal advice glued to the front cover and the first few pages of the volume. Account book, v. 3. (1890-1906), lists accounts with customers for general merchandise, cotton shipments, as well as medical visits and medicine dispensed. Mss. 3540, 3699.
