Location: C:72. Contemporary manuscript copies of documents presented to Parliament aimed at documenting the real and perceived injustices committed by the Spanish against British merchants engaging in trade with the American colonies and the West Indies. Many of the actions taken by Spanish agents against British subjects were used as justification for the conflict known as the War of Jenkins' Ear. Documents include letters of Sir Benjamin Keene, agent of the South Sea Company in Spain; petitions of grievances to Parliament presented before the committee of the House of Commons; and the report of the committee. Newton of 10 Wardour Street in London from R. H. Bromley. The first letter concerns payment of rent for a property by Ms. Hastings. The second letter concerns the occupancy of a house from December 1, 1833 to May or June 1, 1836 by Viscountess Barrington. Mss. 822.

The Brownell Land Company was the 21st century legacy of the numerous business ventures of the Brownell family in Louisiana beginning in 1880, including Berwick Lumber Company, Brownell Drews Lumber Company, Brownell Kidd Company, and People’s Ice and Cold Storage. The records document the everyday business transactions of the Brownell family’s businesses and the mark left by their businesses on the Louisiana coast and terrain in St. Martin, Assumption, St. Mary, Iberia, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, and Terrebonne Parishes. Records include financial records, such as taxes, journals, ledgers, cash books, and annual reports; land records including deeds, leases, sales, and titles; lumber records including tallies from the mill and tallies from what is pulled from the land and water; administrative and legal records such as correspondence, court cases, and meeting minutes; and employee records. Papers consist of correspondence, research notes, clippings, photographs, and financial records relating primarily to Jules M. Burguières, Jr.’s involvement in the sugar and timber industries of Louisiana and Florida. Some research material in French and German. The estate papers of Joseph E. Burguières are also included. Correspondence, personal papers, business records, printed material, and photographs reflect the personal activities and plantation operations of the Butler and related Mathews families, with a focus on Edward Butler and his immediate family. Noteworthy are two letters discussing a sick slave (Dec. 29, 1817) and runaway slaves (Aug. 15, 1835). The first letter is dated March 21, 1826 requesting references concerning the potential tenant. The second letter is dated March 21, 1826 and concerns renting his house and adjoining stables. The third letter is dated March 22, 1826 and contains J. Byng's decision not to lease the house unless it is to a small family. Mss. 822.
