  • Manship, Douglas L. Papers, 1960-1963. .5 linear ft. Location: 10:43. Journalist of Baton Rouge, president of Capital City Press, and founder of the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication. Drafts of editorials broadcast on WBRZ-TV, and letters in response to the broadcasts. Letters particularly concern Manship's stance on the debate sparked by bills presented in the State Legislature on racial integration of public schools in Louisiana. Drafts of House Bills nos. 1-8 (1960) by T. T. Fields of Union Parish, Bryan J. Lehmann of St. Charles Parish, and Risley C. Triche of Assumption Parish are included. Papers contain lecture notes, examinations, reading lists, and research material pertaining to the writings of Marilla and others. Material includes literary papers submitted to Marilla for review and editing, bibliographies, and reprints of works written or edited by Marilla. There is also a galley proof for Marilla's MILTON AND THE MODERN MAN. A large portion of the collection consists of literary journals and reprints of articles on English literature, particularly the works of John Milton and Henry Vaughan. Mss. 2745.

Collection includes diaries; plantation records; legal documents; personal correspondence; bank records; and Civil War papers. Diaries comment on public health, yellow fever epidemic, race relations, labor and the political participation of African Americans. Other volumes record activities of the Clinton & Port Hudson Railroad and the Silliman Female Collegiate Institute. Papers of son , Bulow, reflect his activities as planter, steamboat operator, and warehouse owner.   • Martin, Leonard, 1908-, interviewee. Oral history interview, 1993. 1 sound cassette (1.5 hours), Index (4 pages). Location: L:4700.0281. Sugarcane farmer and great-grandson of a slave, Martin was a resident of Four Corners, Louisiana, an unincorporated community south of Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. Martin's account of the sale of his great-grandfather as a slave along with descriptions of his education; his father's career as the first African American schoolteacher in the area; work in sugarcane farming; and a dance-hall operator, Alice LeBaude. Martin also describes forms of transportation; the marriage of his white maternal grandmother to a Native American; his own marriage; work in Texas; the use of drugs in Four Corners; and his religion. Correspondence and business and legal papers of John McMurran, his wife, and their daughter, concern travel, social life, and the administration of the Woodlands and Killarney plantations. Letters mention judgeships in Mississippi, the funeral of Henry Clay, the sale of the plantation of a mulatto politician, the effects of Reconstruction, and problems of plantation management during Reconstruction. Nelson and Lottie McQuiston married in 1921 and lived in the Atchafalaya Basin area of Louisiana. They resided in Baker, Louisiana, at the time of this interview. They discuss geographical changes in the Atchafalaya Basin since 1929; the Atchafalaya spillway; lumbering in the area; local treatment of illnesses; residents shopping for groceries and clothing; mail service; education; boat building; and housing. The McVea-Neville Family papers consist of personal correspondence, items related to family property, and financial records. Of note is a copy of a Confederate States army substitution affidavit, dated October 24, 1864. The property records include official state and parish documents and notarized copies of various property agreements between McVea-Neville family members. Of note are a court judgment document on a family property dispute, dated December 3, 1865, and a plat map of Neville property, dated March 18, 1864. The financial records include receipts, bills of sale, ledger pages, tax rolls, credit account statements. Other items of note include a congressional report booklet on abandoned property claims, dated December 20, 1889, an insurance policy document for Mrs. M.L. Neville, dated November 6, 1903, and a monthly grade report for Albert McVea from Silliman Collegiate Institute, dated January 30, 1889. Mss. 3284.
