  • Melancon Family. Papers, 1857-1993, undated. 0.3 linear ft. Location: U:237. Acadian family from Ascension Parish, Louisiana. Papers include family documents, correspondence, notes & writings, financial records, genealogy, and printed & graphic material. Most of the papers date from the late nineteenth century and were created or collected by Victorin Melancon, Jr. or his daughter Marguerite Marie Melancon (Landry) of Ascension Parish, Louisiana.   • Memoire : L'Etude des Sons du Patois Negre Louisianais, 1927-1928. 1 manuscript volume. Location Y:85. Judith Major was a public school teacher and later professor emeritus of French at Louisiana State University. This study, conducted by Major, examines the phonetics and pronunciation of the "patois negre louisianais," a French creole spoken by African Americans in Louisiana. Major utilizes an artificial palate and documents the sounds and movements of the mouth, using diagrams and photographs, while pronouncing certain words. Mss. 5081.

Lawyer of New Orleans who served as chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court. He married Caroline Thomas of Cottage Hall Plantation, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. Letters (1830-1838) from Merrick to his mother, Ann Merrick, and his brother, William Winston Merrick record Merrick's activities as a prep student in Wilbraham, Mass., and his law studies and early legal career in Ohio. Middleton describes her family background, her early education and decision to attend LSU, her sorority rush experience, social life on campus, her favorite teachers and classes, and Helen Gordon, Dean of Women. French Catholic planter of Milliken's Bend, East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. Morancy's father emigrated from France to Santo Domingo before 1789; the children were orphaned and raised in Louisiana. Papers include family letters concerning social life, the Catholic Church, and education, in northeastern Louisiana and Kentucky. Confederate civilian letters describe hardships during the Civil War; later letters (Reconstruction period) document relocation of refugees and the demands of African American laborers.   • Moss, Martha, 1827-1859. Diary, 1853-1870. 1 volume, 3 items. Location J:20, MISC:M. Diary of Martha Moss, a New Orleans Sabbath school teacher. In it, she discusses her classes and students, including her disappointment that one of her students “has embraced the religion of the Romish church” (June 18, 1855). Moss also recounts her charitable work, shopping excursions in New Orleans, her reading habits, pieces she has written or plans to write for various periodicals, and the death of her younger sister in February 1855.
