Bound handwritten manuscript of Anthony Vallas's History of the Louisiana State Seminary, 1864, and a printed copy of the work published in 1935 on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University. Covering the period beginning from the establishment of the institution by the Louisiana State Legislature in 1855 through the Civil War, the brief history describes the tenure of William Tecumseh as college president, the seizure of the school by Federal troops, and the use of the school as a field hospital during the war. Memos sent to directors and supervisors of W.P.A. projects in Louisiana pertaining to personnel, employment regulations, preparation of annual reports, conversion of W.P.A. projects to wartime purposes, and operation and administration of programs. Projects included are the Writers' Project, Shoe Repair Project, Music Project, Arts and Crafts Projects, Nursery School Project, and many others. Louisiana poet, a founder of the National Federation of the State Poetry Society, and co-founder of the Louisiana State Poetry Society. Mary married Evans Spencer Wall, Jr., also a writer. Correspondence, legal and financial records, poetry, printed items, and photographs documenting Mary B. Wall's life and literary activities from 1911 to 1990. The bulk of the collection consists of Berthelot family correspondence. Also present are a few legal documents of Joseph Albert Berthelot and a family tree for the Welch family. Eleanor Percy Lee (nee Ware), poet and novelist of Natchez, Mississippi. Her sister, father, and daughter were also authors. Writings and correspondence of Eleanor Lee include six manuscript volumes of novels, prose, and poems. Collection also includes loose poems, family photographs, and sheet music.   • Welles, Gideon, 1802-1878. Manuscript, circa 1878. 1 v. Location: Misc.:W. U.S. Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War. Manuscript of an article by Gideon Welles, apparently intended for publication. In the article Welles strenuously disagrees with Wickham Hoffman, who had argued that General Benjamin Butler had a prominent role in the planning and execution of the capture of New Orleans by federal troops in 1862.   • Welty, Eudora. Letter, 1960 January 18. 1 item. Location: Misc:W. Mississippi writer. Typewritten letter from Eudora Welty to N.M. Caffee, chair of a committee of the College of Arts and Sciences at Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, La., declining Caffee's invitation to participate in the committee's symposium.   • Welty, Eudora. Papers, 1951-1957 (bulk 1951-1952). Location: 7:28, VAULT:25, VAULT MRDF 17. A native of Mississippi, Welty (1909-2001) was a 20th-century writer. Thirty-nine letters, two postcards, and three greeting cards written primarily by Eudora Welty to John F. Robinson, her long-time friend and fellow author, relating primarily to their respective writing careers and mutual friends. Several letters chronicle her stay in Ireland with writer Elizabeth Bowen and the experiences of her time there upon her work. For further information see online catalog. Mss. 4919.
