  • Schwartz, Kurt S. Papers, 1932-1967, undated (bulk 1932-1935). 18 items. Location: C:96 OS:S. Schwartz was a member of the Louisiana State University Cadet Band during the 1930's. Papers consist of student paraphernalia including an LSU Library card, Athletic Association student tickets, commencement program, concert programs for the LSU Cadet Band, a University Directory, a freshman beanie, and a LSU license plate. Also included are a letter from Huey P. Long stating that Long had no influence in securing scholarships and a copy of the musical score for EVERY MAN A KING for solo clarinet.   • Scott, Emily T. (Emily Turpin). Papers, 1850-1935 (bulk 1882-1935). 326 items; 1 vol. Location: A:25. Emily Turpin Scott, resident of Sicily Island, Louisiana. Correspondence from her children and other family members pertains chiefly to family matters; some correspondence is concerned with land holdings of Scott's son-in-law, R. H. Harris. Also includes an 1865 amnesty oath signed by Israel Scott. Other letters discuss the cattle, lumber, and oil industries, and the death of Huey Long.   • Scouten, Arthur Hawley. Papers, 1934-1992. 0.2 linear ft. 18:4. Arthur Hawley Scouten, a writer and scholar, attended Louisiana State University, where he received his B.A. (1935), M.A. (1938), and Ph.D. (1942) in English. During the 1930's, he worked as an assistant in the LSU Athletic Department, managing Tiger Stadium during home football games. Scouten went on to teach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1947-1980. His research interests included Shakespeare, American literature, and 18th-century British satire. Papers consist of correspondence, printed items, and photographs documenting Scouten's career. Correspondence relates primarily to his work in the academic profession. There are also several letters from Russell Long. Later letters to his son, Lee, recount his memories of Robert Penn Warren, Cleanth Brooks, and James Monroe Smith at LSU; and managing Tiger Stadium. Printed items consist of programs for professional conferences, news clippings, a 1935 voter's registration card, and several LSU football field passes from the 1930's. Photographs include a signed photo of Russell Long as a student, construction of a building at LSU in 1936, and several images of Scouten. Mss. 5049.

Printed copy of speeches by Senator Huey Long's secretary, Earle J. Christenberry, and Louisiana attorney Maurice Gatlin attacking Smith for claiming to be Huey Long's successor and head of the Share Our Wealth movement. For further information, see online catalog.   • Snyder, Robert E. Papers, 1919-1979. 1.33 linear ft. Location: 52:11, OS:S. Professor of American studies in the State University System of Florida. Consists of research papers compiled by Dr. Snyder while writing his book Cotton Crisis. Papers include correspondence detailing the cotton crisis of 1931 and Huey P. Long’s plan for a cotton holiday. Mss. 3836.

Interview discusses campus life, Strumberg's first Master's thesis on women's occupations in Baton Rouge, and her career as elementary school teacher and LSU teacher. Collection includes biographical and genealogical information on the Sylvest family, recollections of events, individuals, family reunions, and references to Sylvest's career as an educator and his relationship with Huey Long.   • Tanner, J. Thomas (James Thomas), 1885-1980. Papers, 1869-1980. 9 linear ft. (1,275 items and 56 m.s. volumes). Location: R:19-22, 77:86-87, OS:T. Attorney, banker, state legislator representing Caddo Parish (1920-1924), and Shreveport public servant (1930-1966). Collection consists primarily of diaries kept by Tanner (1929-1980), which include news clippings, political cartoons, and some photographs.   • Uhler, John Earle. Papers, 1921-1960 (bulk 1931-1959). 13.4 linear ft. Location: 79:22-32, OS:U, 99:U. John Earle Uhler was an English professor at Louisiana State University from 1928-1961. His teaching and research interests included Shakespeare, 18th century English drama, English Renaissance literature, and linguistics. A public controversy over Uhler's novel Cane Juice, published in 1931, led to his removal from the faculty, and reinstatement six months later.  Papers include personal and professional correspondence; published and unpublished literary and academic manuscripts; and printed material, including newspaper clippings, newspapers, and periodicals related to Uhler's writing and interest in political events. College professor and writer who served on the faculty of Louisiana State University, Dept. of English, from 1933-1942. In a typed letter to a Mr. Stahley, Robert Penn Warren discusses the administration at Louisiana State University during Huey P. Long's term as governor. He also comments on Professor William A.   • Weiss, Seymour. Papers, 1927-1972 (bulk 1930-1960). 11.25 linear ft. Location: 30:38-42, OS:W, Vault:36. Manager and owner of the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. Weiss was a confidant of Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey P. Long, who made the hotel his headquarters. The bulk of the collection consists of circulars announcing speeches and the political positions of Long and other Louisiana politicians. Also present are political cartoons by 'Trist' [Trist Wood] and various campaign items. The collection includes letters of Huey P. Long related to issues of concern to Louisiana citizens and sheet music for 'Every Man a King,' 'Follow Long,' and several other songs, with words by Long. Mss. 4165.

Pipkin (1931-1936); and an address entitled "The strange case of Louisiana and Huey P. Long," presented by Harry Gamble of New Orleans to the Louisiana Legislature. Research materials, which comprise a large portion of this collection, contain notes, note cards, legal documents, and clippings pertaining to the Civil War, major Civil War figures, U.S. history, military history, and Louisiana governor and senator, Huey P. Long. Included are Civil War correspondence and diaries (most are transcripts or copies), speeches of Huey P. Long, and oral history interviews relating to Long.
