Thorn, (Jesse) Dale, (1942-2014) 1978-2013 (bulk 1981-1986) 1.25 linear feet. Location 43:69. The materials in the Dale Thorn Papers consist of legal documents related to US v. Louisiana and the establishment of a higher education consent decree, professional writings and journal articles related to higher education administration, photographs and drafts for a book written by Thorn, greeting cards and materials from the Public Relations Society of America. Dale Thorn was a journalist, press secretary, director of higher education in Louisiana and a journalism professor at LSU. He was born on October 7, 1942 in Brandon, Mississippi. He taught at LSU and was press secretary to Edwin Edwards during his first two terms as governor. He died on May 8, 2014.

Tureaud, A.P. Collection, 1963-1964. 45 items. MISC:T. A.P. Tureaud, Sr. was the principal attorney for the Louisiana NAACP, handling nearly all desegregation and civil rights cases in Louisiana from the 1940s through the 1960s. In 1964, he represented six African-American students in a lawsuit against the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors. These students became the first to integrate LSU's undergraduate program. This collection consists of photocopies of a selection of documents from the A.P. Tureaud Papers at the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University. Documents include legal correspondence and court records related to this 1964 case. Mss. 5222.

Uhler, John Earle. Papers, 1921-1960 (bulk 1931-1959). 13.4 linear ft. Location: 79:22-32, OS:U, 99:U. John Earle Uhler was an English professor at Louisiana State University from 1928-1961. His teaching and research interests included Shakespeare, 18th century English drama, English Renaissance literature, and linguistics. A public controversy over Uhler's novel Cane Juice, published in 1931, led to his removal from the faculty, and reinstatement six months later. Papers include personal and professional correspondence; published and unpublished literary and academic manuscripts; and printed material, including newspaper clippings, newspapers, and periodicals related to Uhler's writing and interest in political events. Bound handwritten manuscript of Anthony Vallas's History of the Louisiana State Seminary, 1864, and a printed copy of the work published in 1935 on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University. Covering the period beginning from the establishment of the institution by the Louisiana State Legislature in 1855 through the Civil War, the brief history describes the tenure of William Tecumseh as college president, the seizure of the school by Federal troops, and the use of the school as a field hospital during the war. Letters (1863-1865) from W. P. Renwick to his family from camps near Syndus Hill, Mississippi, and Alexandria and Shreveport, Louisiana, describe aspects of camp life. Other letters (1871-1881) from Bastrop and Monroe, Louisiana, discuss local and family news. Letters (1883-1884) from Cadet Joseph Renwick describe his life at Louisiana State University. Papers consist of one thirty-six page, anecdotal document comprised of notes taken by Jesse Walker (LSU professor) during conversations over coffee he had with Fred B. Kniffen from 1975-1993. Fred Kniffen was a Boyd professor at Louisiana State University who is credited with founding the LSU geography and anthropology program. This collection of notes is a multifaceted look at the personal life and early years of Kniffen. He makes frequent mention of fellow colleagues Richard J. Russell, Henry V. Ware Family papers, 1865-1871. 2 items. Location: MISC:W. Henry Ware (1813-1898) was a planter, Democrat, and prohibitionist whose children included Richard Mathis Ware of New Orleans, Louisiana, and James A. Ware of Belle Grove and Celeste plantation, Louisiana. This collection includes a letter sent on behalf of the Corps of Cadets to Richard Mathis Ware from the Committee of Reference in Case of Reinstatement. He was dismissed from Louisiana State University following an incident involving the \"Asylum Bell,\" but the committee investigating the incident rescinded the charges. The second item is two printed letters to the editor of South-Western written by H. Ware in 1865 regarding politics in Harrison County, Texas. Mss. 5127.
