Diaries kept during the war and letters to Taylor's wife, Margaret A. "Netta" relate to military life, military campaigns, troop movements, African American troops, and medical care. Letters from his wife relate to family matters, farming, health, concern for his well-being, and the progress of the war. Mss. 1647, 1653.

  • Tibbets, Hiram B. Family Papers, 1830-1857. 25 items. Location: A:4. Planter and physician of Lake Providence, East Carroll Parish, Louisiana. A native of Massachusetts, Tibbetts and his wife corresponded with his brother John C. Tibbetts in Boston and New Hampshire. Letters primarily to John C. Tibbetts deal with planter-slave relations, and plantation and family news. Topics include Christmas festivities; a wedding held in the slave quarters; and the prevalence of cholera. A partial letter (ca. 1850) provides analysis of the political situation in Louisiana and Mississippi following the Compromise of 1850. For further information, see online catalog.   • Tower, Eli. Letter, 1866 April 8. 1 item. Location: Misc:T. Letter written by Tower to his cousin relating family matters and his own good employment prospects. He also comments on people moving to Brazil and Mexico because of poor conditions in the postwar South. Tower also mentions an outbreak of small pox in Mobile, Alabama, and throughout the South, cholera in another area of Alabama, and an expected outbreak of yellow fever in Mobile and New Orleans. Bound handwritten manuscript of Anthony Vallas's History of the Louisiana State Seminary, 1864, and a printed copy of the work published in 1935 on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of Louisiana State University. Covering the period beginning from the establishment of the institution by the Louisiana State Legislature in 1855 through the Civil War, the brief history describes the tenure of William Tecumseh as college president, the seizure of the school by Federal troops, and the use of the school as a field hospital during the war. Captain of Company L, 325th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Varnado was wounded in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and was a patient in a veterans hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. Papers include letters written by Varnado around the time of the Meuse-Argonne battle, and documents and items related to Varnado's military service. Confederate officer in the Orleans Artillery Battalion in the Civil War and later Chief of Ordnance, Louisiana State National Guard (1889-1896). Papers include Civil War dispatches, field orders, vouchers, passes and correspondence. A notebook (1861) kept by a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, physician contains remedies for illness, some in French. Two case records books of Vinet deal with the 1878 yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans and document relief administered by the Howard Association. Some notebook entries in French.   • Waddill Family Papers, 1835-1994 (bulk 1861-1866). 0.5 linear ft. Location: E:18. George Daniel Waddill, a Baton Rouge druggist, was the son of Abel Waddill, Baton Rouge magistrate. George served as a hospital steward in the Civil War. Joanna Fox, later his wife, served as a nurse. Papers contain correspondence, including Civil War correspondence of George Waddill; genealogical information on the Waddill and Bessonett families; and an autograph book of Elizabeth McMichael.   • Waddill, George D. (George Daniel). Papers, 1841-1892 (bulk 1861-1865). 21 items. Location: Misc:W. Confederate soldier in the Civil War and Baton Rouge druggist. Waddill served in the 3rd Louisiana Infantry Regiment. In 1863 he was appointed as a hospital steward. Civil War papers include military furlough and travel passes; Confederate bonds; military orders assigning Waddill to hospitals in Mississippi; an 1865 document granting parole to G. D. Waddill; and Waddill's 1865 Oath of Allegiance to the United States. Collection includes a letter from L. B. LeCand written from Corinth, Mississippi, to Joanna Fox of Natchez giving an account of the Battle of Shiloh.   • Ward, Samuel Parkhurst. Papers, 1859-1920. 55 items, 3 v. Locations: Misc.: W, O:24. The collection consists of papers and account books. The papers contain accounts, notes requesting medical visits, and printed material. Printed material includes several newspaper clippings on politics, church news and remedies for livestock diseases (undated). Account books, v. 1 (1859-1869, 1884-1886) and v. 2 (1870-1905) list accounts with patients for medical visits and medicine dispensed. The first volume contains entries for medical visits to slaves prior to the end of the Civil War. There is a notation on page 83 of v. 1 of a payment made with Confederate currency. This volume also has newspaper clippings relating to poetry, obituaries and personal advice glued to the front cover and the first few pages of the volume. Account book, v. 3. (1890-1906), lists accounts with customers for general merchandise, cotton shipments, as well as medical visits and medicine dispensed. Mss. 3540, 3699.
  • Warmoth, Henry C. Papers, 1869-1872. 11 items, 1 volume. Location: MISC:W. Reconstruction governor of Louisiana, a sugar planter, and a businessman. Correspondence received as governor concerns political and judicial appointments and quarantines.
