James Morris Morgan was a lawyer, planter, and journalist involved in politics. Relatives include the Frellsen, Hicky, Erksine, and Bunyan families. Correspondence, genealogical notes, family histories, and other papers document the Morgan, Frellsen, and related families. An autobiography by Margaret Benson Erksine (1840) describes her captivity with Shawnee Indians in Kentucky. He worked as a watchmaker, engraver, commercial artist, and photographer. In the 1880s, he owned a photographic studio which produced stereographic cards and views of local subjects. Stereographs and photographic prints depict New Orleans monuments, buildings, hotels, the French Quarter, Lake Pontchartrain, steamers on the Mississippi River, Louisiana swamps, St. Louis Cemetery, and street scenes.
