  • Johnson (Alfred Grima) Collection, 1805-2001 (bulk: 1850-1950). 1.3 linear feet. Locations: 111:7, OS:J. Retired Central Intelligence Agency officer and historic preservationist. Collection consists of correspondence, financial and legal documents, research notes, photographs, and other records pertaining to the Grima, Montegut, Pitot, Foley, and Pugh families of South Louisiana.   • Johnson, Charles Andrew, 1818-1896. Papers, 1832-1896 (bulk 1858-1894). 514 items, 1 ms. vol. Location: UU:65, OS:J. Native of New Haven, Connecticut, and a lawyer in New Orleans. Johnson served as a judge in Donaldsonville, Louisiana (1843) and in 1855 began a partnership in a New Orleans firm. Collection contains passports, letters (1858), military passes (1863-1864), a receipt for bonds (1864), bank checks (1866-1869), and two letters and a newspaper clipping (1873) relating to lawsuits of Johnson. Letter describes the training of his regiment on Long Island, the sea voyage from New York to New Orleans, back upriver to Baton Rouge, and African American soldiers in the Union army. New Orleans physician and scientific writer, Confederate medical authority, and president of the Louisiana State Board of Health. Papers consist of manuscript writings by Jones pertaining to investigations of various diseases, studies on American archaeology and anthropology, and published and unpublished papers on Confederate medical history. Union soldier in a unit which was training and drilling at Camp Kearney, near New Orleans, during the Civil War. Two-page letter giving a brief description of Jones' military training and drill practice at Camp Kearney.   • Kellogg, William Pitt, 1830-1918. Papers, 1861, 1869-1884. 1,238 items. Location: U:176-179, OS:K. Collector of the Port of New Orleans, U.S. senator and representative from Louisiana, and governor of Louisiana. Papers relating chiefly to Kellogg's gubernatorial administration and including letters from contemporary politicians concerning local patronage, African American voting, and federal occupation of certain areas of the state. Included are petitions for redress of grievances; extradition papers for fugitives from justice; and a joint resolution of the Louisiana Legislature opposing Kellogg's U.S. Senate membership. Kimbell's letters were written to his wife and describe his service in Louisiana, including fighting near New Orleans at Camp Kenner, Baton Rouge, and Port Hudson. Correspondence, literary writings in notebooks, photographs, bound manuscript volumes, and printed material concern the literary career of Grace King, historical interests, travels, and personal affairs. Her correspondence and diaries describe her extensive travel throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Diary 3 describes her childhood experiences at L'Embarass plantation in St. Martin Parish. Her correspondence also describes yachting in Florida and other Southern states.   • Kinney, John C. (John Coddington), d. 1891. Letters, 1862-1864. 10 items. Location: Misc:K. Yale University graduate and Union officer in the 13th Connecticut Regiment during the Civil War. Letters provide detailed descriptions of his military service on Ship Island, in occupied New Orleans, and under General Grover during the Red River Expedition. They include observations on federal generals and Thibodaux, Louisiana, skirmishes. Two letters describe Kinney's assignment, training, and duties in the Signal Corps. Cotton planters of Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and proprietors of Clinton Brick and Tile Company and the East Louisiana Land Investment Company. Letters (1861-1863) from Granville L. Alspaugh to his mother describe his service in the Confederate Army at Vicksburg. Papers (1851-1893) also reflect social, personal, and business matters, including the sale of cotton through factors in New Orleans. Letters of Robert Granville Knox (1890-1899) describe student life at Louisiana State University, his partnership in a drugstore in Hammond, La., and his participation in the Spanish American War, with Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Later correspondence (1900-1921) include letters written to Miss Elise Walker by soldiers during World War I. The collection includes the Papers of the La Villebeuvre family and the related Jourdain, Peytavin, Gray, Forstall, Roman, Peters, Toledano, and Hyman families of New Orleans and St. James Parish. The majority of letters are personal and are written by various members of the family, including some relatives from Quebec. The later correspondence has a good percentage of business letters.
