Letter written from a camp near Monroe, Louisiana, by McElhenny to his family. Genealogical notes list birth and death dates of members of the McElhenny family and contain biographical information about the related Fraser family of Kentucky. Journalist who worked on the New Orleans Picayune and the Baton Rouge Gazette. McGrath was a Confederate veteran who later founded the Baton Rouge Daily Truth and Weekly Truth. Papers include correspondence (among it McGrath's Civil War letters to his wife); an anonymous Confederate soldier's diary; legal documents; and scrapbooks relating to the interests and activities of McGrath's three daughters. Available on microfilm 5735: University Publications of America Confederate Military Manuscripts Series B, Reels 13-14. Physician of New Orleans who served as a Confederate surgeon and hospital inspector in the Civil War. After the war, McKelvey returned to his medical practice in New Orleans. Papers include a record book (1864-1865) containing official correspondence and inspection reports for hospitals in the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana; a request to practice medicine in New Orleans; and records of that practice.   • Milton, Horace P. Letters, 1863. 2 items. Location: MISC:M. Private, 47th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, and clerk in the Ordnance Office, Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, in New Orleans. Letter written from an encampment at the Metairie Ridge Race Course in New Orleans, (April 15, 1863) comments in detail on regimental personnel problems and describes the cemetery tombs and the surrounding area. A letter dated May 8, 1863, describes health and weather conditions in New Orleans, the presence of large numbers of "grey-backs," and local excitement at the news of Colonel Benjamin Henry Grierson's raid through Mississippi and the reception upon his arrival in New Orleans. He served under General Benjamin Franklin Butler before he began drilling at camps Kearney and Stearns in the Reserve Brigade, under Brigadier General Godfrey Weitzel. Letters describe Nickerson's experiences at the Custom House, and in military training in Camp Kearney and Camp Stearns. William Miller Owen was a Confederate officer in the Washington Artillery of New Orleans, Army of Northern Virginia, during the Civil War. Owen narrates events during the march from Richmond, Va., to Petersburg and the siege of Petersburg.
