  • Inman, B. R. (Benajah R.), b. 1820. Family Papers, 1808-1888. .2 linear ft. (68 items). Location: B:50. Planter of Wilkinson County, Mississippi. Inman inherited Smithland Plantation in 1863 from his aunt, Nancy Quine. Collection includes financial records; legal materials; correspondence; and miscellaneous and printed items. The financial and legal records document Smithfield Plantation and a dry goods store on it. Business letters to John Lee, a purchasing agent in New Orleans, deal with the price of cotton and other commodities. Slave bills of sale and labor contracts with sharecroppers are included. Collection contains passports, letters (1858), military passes (1863-1864), a receipt for bonds (1864), bank checks (1866-1869), and two letters and a newspaper clipping (1873) relating to lawsuits of Johnson. (1851), promissory note (1855), certification of his status as a naturalized United States citizen (Feb. 5, 1864), an act of procurement authorizing Louis F. Jonte to represent William Tujague (March 14, 1864), and Franklin Jonte's residency registration (1878). The collection also contains a cabinet card photograph of Louis Jonte (ca. 1860). Mss. 5256.
