  • McCarstle, Cullen. Manuscript volumes, 1842-1843. 2 vols. (on microfilm) Location: Mss. Mf.:M. Record book contains bills of lading (1842-1843) for cotton loaded at Fontania, La., onto various steamboats bound for New Orleans. Scrapbook (undated) contains clippings and recipes, mostly for baked goods, and remedies for various diseases in animals and humans, including cancer, cholera, yellow fever, diphtheria and rheumatism.   • McCulloch, James. Letter, March 16, 1837. 1 letter. Location: MISC:M. James McCulloch, in New Orleans, Louisiana at the time, writes to Isaac Abercrombie in Greenfield, Franklin County, Massachusetts. McCulloch mentions that he is sailing from New Orleans to New York, and he asks Abercrombie to write what the price of corn is in Greenfield. McCulloch also mentions that he will ship items up the Connecticut River in Hartford. Mss. 5355.

General commission merchant of New Orleans and planter of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Papers consist primarily of business records, correspondence (1801-1850) with business associates, commission firms, merchants, planters, tenants and civil authorities. Papers also include personal correspondence, with some letters relating to the American Colonization Society and the Washington National Monument Society.   • McGrath, John, 1835-1924. Family Papers, 1785-1924. 208 items; 15 ms. vols.; 9 printed vols. Location: S:27; O:21; OS:M; 99:M; Mss. Mf.:M. Journalist who worked on the New Orleans Picayune and the Baton Rouge Gazette. McGrath was a Confederate veteran who later founded the Baton Rouge Daily Truth and Weekly Truth. Papers include correspondence (among it McGrath's Civil War letters to his wife); an anonymous Confederate soldier's diary; legal documents; and scrapbooks relating to the interests and activities of McGrath's three daughters. Accounts of medical services received by prominent Cheneyville, Rapides Parish, Louisiana, residents and their slaves. Letter to Captain Alexander Jones from Meeker, writing from New Orleans. Meeker discusses errors in the accounts of B. Buck & Sons and the bark (shipping vessel) Elizabeth. In addition to his own signature, Meeker signed the letter for J. McPherson (most likely John McPherson). Mss. 5351.

Letters reflect Caroline Merrick's opinions of women's dress and the facilities at the watering resort Feliciana Springs, near Clinton, Louisiana, and provide details about her family and friends. Letters (1830-1838) from Merrick to his mother, Ann Merrick, and his brother, William Winston Merrick record Merrick's activities as a prep student in Wilbraham, Mass., and his law studies and early legal career in Ohio.   • Milne Asylum Papers, 1840-1856. 36 items. Location: OS:M. The Milne Asylum was established by the charitable bequest of Alexander Milne, a Scottish immigrant of New Orleans. He bequeathed money and property for the establishment of the Milne Asylums in Milneburg, one for orphan boys, the other for girls. Papers include agreements and orders of appropriations from the estate of Milne for the Milne Asylums, certificates of fees paid by the asylums for goods and services, mortgage documents, and insurance receipts. Included are a request for the admission of a foundling to the asylum, the release of a boy to the asylum by his mother, Papers also relate to the title of land involved in the Milne bequest.
