  • Ayers, Elias L., b.1796. Diary. 1854-1855. 1 vol. Location: G:1. Farmer in western New York State near Trumanburg. Ayers raised barley, oats, wheat, vegetables, fruits, berries, honey, and sheep. Daily entries discuss weather, farm work, crops sold, supplies bought, relatives, political events and opinions, education of 'Oliver,' books and magazines, and religion. Topics include an election for improving a canal and imposing temperance laws. Included is a military land warrant for property in Ohio and a manuscript map of the Territory of New Mexico, showing Ft. Union, Santa Fe, and Taos. For further information, see online catalog. The Barrow family moved to Nuevo Feliciana (now in Louisiana) in 1799 and built several plantation houses there. Papers document the business interests of the Barrow family and their involvement with various fraternal orders. Records of the People's Bank, St. Francisville, and the Creole Oil and Mineral Co. reflect the involvement of the Barrow and Leake families.   • Barstow, Henry. War record and letter, 1862-1880 (bulk 1862-1863). 2 items. Location: Misc:B. Henry Barstow served in I Company of the Massachusetts 4th Infantry during the Civil War. In 1863, he was a prisoner of war in Brashear City, La. He discusses his company's maneuvers from Lakeville, Mass. to Brashear City, La. and describes his experience in the prison camp and subsequent release. Topics include poor health and malnourishment among the soldiers; traveling on the Mississippi River; and general conditions in the camp.   • Batchelor, Albert A. (Albert Agrippa). Papers, 1852-1930 (bulk 1870-1900). 27 linear ft., 41 volumes. Location: S:143-170, J:13, 98:B, OS:B. Personal and business papers, correspondence, diaries, and account books pertain principally to local events, and the operation and management of several plantations in Pointe Coupee Parish, including Bella Vista Plantation, Lakeside Plantation, Phoenix Plantation, Highland Plantation, and Normandy Plantation. Early letters among Batchelor family members describe conditions at the Kentucky Military Institute and the Silliman Female Collegiate Institute, and mention events such as slave insurrections and military operations. Several letters describe Civil War battles, including the 1862 Battle of Kernstown and the 1863 battles of Gettysburg and Chancellorsville. Bernard operated the A. M. Bernard Wagon Works in New Iberia (circa 1886-1958). Papers include business, legal, and financial papers related to the A.M. Bernard Wagon Works and other family concerns, including a syrup plant, oil and gas leases, sulphur mines, land holdings, and livestock operations. Included are a broadside soliciting funds for Methodist Episcopal missionary activities in Africa, and a map (1885) of Louisiana by the Bureau of Immigration.   • Blatchford, John S. Letters, 1887-1888. 2 letters. Location: MISC: B. Two letters to John S. Blatchford of Boston, Massachusetts concerning the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Massachusetts. The first, dated June 6, 1887, is from Reverend Frank Somerville Harraden stating that the "Board" has found it necessary to reduce funding for the fourth consecutive year. The second, dated November 12, 1888, is from Reverend Samuel Seymour Lewis regarding plans for the construction of a proposed church which had been changed from their previous design. Mss. 822.
