Letter to Chase by Andrew White describes his journey from New Orleans to General Zachary Taylor's headquarters at Matamoros, Mexico (1846). Baton Rouge letters from other Chase associates deal with local people and events.   • Chase, Philander, 1775-1852. Letter, 1840 Jan. 23. 1 letter. Location: Misc. Philander Chase was Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Ohio (1819-1831) and of the Diocese of Illinois (1835-1852). Chase in New Orleans, La., writes about his tour to solicit funds for Jubilee College in Robin's Nest, Ill., and the welcome he received in New Orleans from former students whom he had known while living there over 30 years before. Correspondence concerns Claiborne's administration, relations with Native Americans, problems with the importation of slaves, Louisiana bank, Spanish land grants and land surveys in the Natchez District, and Catholic disputes in the district of Saint Bernard. Courtenay regarding going to Public Houses on the Lord's Day to confront patrons there about evil. Reverend Courtenay cannot return to a committee that includes a person with the "'features of the Red Indian'" and "a boundless capacity for evil." Mss. 822.
  • Crump, Anna. Record book, 1931-1955. 1 volume. Location: H:25. Resident of Haynesville, Louisiana. Record book contains monthly expenses including phone, light, and water bills; payments for groceries and chicken feed; tax payments on her properties; and regular purchases of the Haynesville News. Crump logged her income each month consisting of lease and royalty checks from the United Gas Co., Pure Oil Co., Ashland Oil Co., Sohio Oil Co., and Sun Oil Co.; sales of butter, eggs, berries, and figs; government subsidy checks for cotton production; rent from boarders and tenant farmers for her "home place" and the "McLeod place"; and timber and cotton sales. In journal entries, she also wrote notes on the oil exploration on her properties, trips to Shreveport for personal medical examinations, and her gifts and tithes to the Presbyterian Church. Crump noted the birthdays and ages of Clinton and Dorris Crump, without explicitly mentioning whether these were her children. Mss. 4970.

Louisiana politician, an organizer of the state's Republican party, elected to the U.S. Congress, which refused to seat him over differences on Reconstruction.
