Volume contains correspondence, clippings, printed articles, genealogies, family histories, and legal  and church records pertaining to the family history of Gilbert Antoine de Saint-Maxent and his descendants. Letter book contains handwritten copies of letters written by Spalding while in Trinidad, Cuba. Most letters are addressed to Jacob Babbitt & Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island. Letters discuss market conditions for sugar and molasses; the loading of cargo and the shipment of goods and major exports; the arrival of slave ships in the harbor; and the slave trade in the West Indies. Written two years after the Louisiana Purchase, this circular was sent by a German retailer to announce to Spanish-speaking businesses that the cession of Louisiana to the United States has opened the way to free commerce with other countries directly. The firm of Strormann and Ludeling established a house in New Orleans (La.) to deal in linens and other articles. Written in Spanish with translation provided.
