Colonel in the 1st Louisiana Cavalry Volunteers, U.S. Army, under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, Department of the Gulf, New Orleans. Robinson worked for the Central Pacific and Mexican International railroads after the war. Papers chiefly relate to Robinson's military career, including legal documents and letters concerning the investigation of his order to shoot two soldiers for refusal to obey orders (1864).   • Shelly, William. Diary, 1863 January 1-September 23. 1 vol. Location: Misc:S. Union soldier in the 176th New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Shelly served for nine months and was stationed primarily in Louisiana. Diary entries discuss Shelly's sea voyage from New York to Louisiana; his work in the Quartermaster department; his arrival at Lafourche; guerrilla activity in the area; the sound of fighting at Port Hudson; and the capture and parole of his company. Consul to France during the French Revolution and later a planter in Baton Rouge. Account book contains official and personal accounts while Skipwith was consul in Paris, France. Entries report names of American ships, descriptions of cargo, and accounts of individuals including James Monroe and Thomas Pinckney. Letters discuss market conditions for sugar and molasses; the loading of cargo and the shipment of goods and major exports; the arrival of slave ships in the harbor; and the slave trade in the West Indies.
