  • Brownell Land Company Records, 1843-1997 (bulk 1890-1970). 35 linear feet. 131 volumes. Location: 37:1-18, 38:1-8, OS:B, Vault:1. The Brownell Land Company was the 21st century legacy of the numerous business ventures of the Brownell family in Louisiana beginning in 1880, including Berwick Lumber Company, Brownell Drews Lumber Company, Brownell Kidd Company, and People’s Ice and Cold Storage. The records document the everyday business transactions of the Brownell family’s businesses and the mark left by their businesses on the Louisiana coast and terrain in St. Martin, Assumption, St. Mary, Iberia, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, and Terrebonne Parishes. Records include financial records, such as taxes, journals, ledgers, cash books, and annual reports; land records including deeds, leases, sales, and titles; lumber records including tallies from the mill and tallies from what is pulled from the land and water; administrative and legal records such as correspondence, court cases, and meeting minutes; and employee records. Dale, a naval vessel assigned to duty in the Gulf of California during the Mexican War, describe military actions in the town of Guaymas and several nearby villages during the spring months of 1848.   • Burrwood, Louisiana, and Southwest Pass jetties construction photographs, circa 1905-1915. 18 photographic prints. Location: E:65. Between 1898 and 1913, work was conducted to create a sustainable channel 1,000 feet wide and 35 feet deep at the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River delta. Surveying, dredging, and construction of jetties, sills, and other structures took place during this period. Fourteen of eighteen annotated photographic prints document construction of jetties in the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River delta, while three concern the aftermath of the 1915 hurricane and one presents a view of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Letter written to Card's brother and sister from Glendale, Mississippi, describes travel by railroad through Corinth, Mississippi, life in military camp, and the local landscape.   • Carnegie, S. Steve. Papers, 1929-1969. 8.5 linear feet. Location 91:43-47. Contract civil engineer and resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Papers include engineering files, correspondence, subject files, personnel files, and photographic materials which document civil engineering and construction projects in Baton Rouge and other Louisiana towns. Towns include Amite, Baldwin, Bogalusa, Crowley, Independence, Morgan City, Plaquemine, Port Allen, Rayne, St. Martinville, Slidell, Sulphur, and Vinton. Projects include sewerage and sanitation works, highway construction, subdivision plans, parks, and public facilities. Photographic materials consist of photographic prints, negatives, and 16mm motion picture films depicting engineering and construction work and Carnegie's personal life.   • Chandler, E. H. Letter, 1861 May 30. 1 item. Location: Misc. Agent of R. F. & P. Railroad Company. Letter from Confederate Army Headquarters, Fredericksburg, Virginia, instructing Chandler to report to the mayor of Fredericksburg the arrival by railroad of all suspicious persons and to detain them for questioning by military authorities.   • Charles, I. H. (Isaac Henry). Letters, 1841-1848. 10 items. Location: Misc:C. Charles moved with his family from Philadelphia to New Orleans in 1841. There he attended school and worked as a clerk in a commercial house. Letters to a cousin, John Edward Liddall, describe Charles' sea voyage to New Orleans; his secondary education in private schools in Louisiana; the presence of yellow fever; news of the War with Mexico; and reactions to a call for volunteers.   • Clauss & Fischer. Journal, 1851-1852. 1 vol. Location: G:16. Merchants and commission brokers of Bayou Sara, Louisiana. Frederick Fischer and Catherine Clauss were immigrants from Germany. Their son, Charles Leonhardt Fischer, was a Confederate veteran, attorney, and politician of St. Francisville. Journal records expenses for goods and services of local residents and plantation owners and managers, including members of the Turnbull, McKowen, Stirling, Barrow, Joor, Weems, and other families. Papers include notarized copies of legal documents (chiefly mortgage documents, but also court judgments) and miscellaneous financial documents (receipts, bills, checks, and deposit slips). Of particular interest is a property appraisal document (April 19, 1842) that lists the first names of slaves. Appraisal document is for a legal case involving James Drummond and the Clinton and Port Hudson Railroad Company. Part of the East Feliciana Parish Archives Collection. Mss. 1100.

  • Colonel Cutts (Ship). Logbook, 1856-1878 (bulk 1856 February 13-October 19). 1 vol. Location: P:19. Ship which operated out of New Orleans. Its master was Jesse Snow. Logbook recording activities aboard the Colonel Cutts as it sailed from New Orleans to Falmouth, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Cronstadt, London, Cardiff, and back to New Orleans.
