An agent of Fearn Donegan & Co. in New Orleans, La., writes to another in Huntsville, Ala., remarking on the difficulty and expense of transporting railroad iron by boat to Tuscumbia, Ala., the cotton accounts of some clients, and the state of the cotton market in New Orleans.   • Fessenden, Anson D., b. 1839. Papers, 1862-1863, undated 82 items, 1 ms. vol. Location: W:36. Captain in the 53rd Massachusetts Infantry in the Civil War and resident of Townsend, Massachusetts. Letters to Fessenden's family describe camp life in New York and New Orleans, the sea voyage to New Orleans, and the Port Hudson campaign. A diary records experiences in that campaign. Typewritten copy of a letter from Fisher to his brother, Frederick Fisher, describing his trip from New Orleans to San Francisco by schooner and the economic and social conditions in Sacramento, following the discovery of gold in California.   • Foreign trade price lists collection, 1824-1833. 3 items. Location: Misc:F. J. W. Bastian & Son was a firm in Bremen, Germany, importing coffee, sugar, tobacco, and other staples as well as linens, dyes, and spices. Mariatequi, Knight & Co. was a firm based in Havana, exporting sugar, coffee, molasses, and provisions to New Orleans, Louisiana, and other parts of the United States, and to Europe. The foreign trade price lists report the prices of commodities being exported and imported from Bremen, Germany (1824), St. Petersburg, Russia (1824), and Havana, Cuba (1833). The collection extensively documents Foster's political career, his relationship with his wife Rose Ker Foster, and their children's formative years. Materials in the collection include correspondence, financial papers, legislative papers, and printed items. Topics addressed include family matters such as the development and education of the Foster children; Rose's management of Dixie Plantation in Murphy's absences; and Foster's political career and the issues that concerned him, such as the Anti-Lottery campaign, a national income tax, regulating railway rates, flood control, poll taxes, and protection of sugar growers.   • Geo. Limerick & Co. Letter: Vicksburg, Miss., to Lockhart, Fearn and Donegan, Madisonville, Miss., 1842 March 19. 1 item (2 leaves). Location: Misc:G. Shipping company which operated along the Mississippi River, with ports in New Orleans and Vicksburg, Mississippi. It shipped cotton to the Madisonville, Mississippi, merchants Mr. Lockhart, Mr Fearn, and Mr. Donegan. Letter to Lockhart, Fearn, and Donegan denies responsibility for water damage to bales of cotton the company took aboard its ship Vicksburg. Included is an earlier letter (copy) to the merchants also stating the cotton was damaged prior to shipment. For further information, see online catalog. Mss. 3326.

  • Hamilton, John R. Papers, 1863-1865. 0.6 linear ft. Location: X:34, OS:H. U.S. Naval officer during the Civil War. Naval records documenting Civil War operations of the USS Commodore as it patrolled the navigable waterways of Louisiana in order to prevent the South from trading with other countries. Records consist of reports, correspondence, orders, and lists of seamen and Naval officers. Papers also contain some records of the USS Vincennes. Mss. 5066.
  • Hamilton, William S. Papers, 1780-1930 (bulk 1807-1861). 3 linear ft., 14 manuscript volumes, 16 microfilm reels. Locations: T:81-87, H:21, OS:H, MSS.MF:H. United States Army officer under General Wade Hampton; slave owner and planter of Holly Grove Plantation, West Feliciana Parish; and politician who served on the first board of trustees for the College of Louisiana and a term in the Louisiana Legislature. While most papers pertain to William S. Hamilton's social, political, and professional life, some papers also pertain to John Hamilton (William S.'s father) and the children of William S. and Eliza C. Hamilton. Papers reflect the administration of United States Army troops in the Territory of Orleans and Mississippi and give an inclusive picture of national and Louisiana politics. Included are descriptions of Southern college facilities and curricula and early medical treatments in hydropathy (hydrotherapy). The papers also document conditions in the United States Army during the Mexican War, land speculation in Texas, and various aspects of plantation life and economy (including purchasing and treatment of slaves). Business papers of the law firm of Harris and Harris, a partnership of Confederate General Nathaniel Harrison Harris and his brother Captain James W. M. Harris. The firm operated from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Correspondence from the collection concerns railroad bonds, contracts and construction; land deeds and sales; taxes; insurance policies; ledgers; receipts; bills; cancelled checks; and bank settlements.
