Hilliard, plantation owner of Grand Lake, Chicot County, Arkansas, originally of Henry County, Kentucky. Mrs. Hilliard was related by marriage to Leonidas Polk. Diary depicts plantation life from an affluent woman's perspective, describing family holidays, social occasions, steamboat travel, and trips to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Kentucky. Includes her son's expenses at Kentucky Military Institute (1866). Orramel Hinckley was a steamboat owner and captain whose business was centered principally in New Orleans and Opelousas, La. These papers consist primarily of account books, correspondence, receipts, and other records concerning Orramel Hinckley's river steamboat "Irene" and her frequent trips between Washington, La., and New Orleans between September 1865 and July 1866. Steamboat owner and captain whose business was centered mainly in New Orleans and Opelousas, Louisiana. Hinckley's wife and son lived in Washington, Saint Landry Parish, Louisiana. Personal and business papers and account books (1834-1897) document Hinckley's work as a steamboat captain. There are also volumes relating to personal matters, Civil War letters and items, and the bylaws and rules of a chapter of the Royal Arch Masons. One letter is to his sister Elizabeth Colby of Salisbury, Massachusetts. The letters were sent from New York, Brooklyn, New Orleans, Liverpool, and Cadiz.   • Hotson, Ernest B. Diaries, 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908. 4 vols. Location: M:20. Probably a British officer. He was stationed on the Kathiawar Peninsula (since 1948, Saurashtra Peninsula), India. Diary entries provide descriptions of weather conditions, local flora and fauna, methods of transportation, hunting expeditions, social and recreational activities, and some military activities. The packet ship Huntsville (523 tons) sailed with the Louisiana & New York Line of packet ships, sailing twice monthly in season between New York and New Orleans. This log book records three voyages of the Huntsville between New York and New Orleans under Edward Cornell, master, between September 16, 1843, and June 25, 1844. Mss. 3712.

James and John Innerarity were associates of the commercial house of John Forbes and Company, Pensacola, Florida. Letters from Innerarity to Eligius Fromentin, U.S. Senator from Louisiana, and to the Land Office of East Pearl River pertain to the settlement of land claims between the Mississippi and Perdido Rivers. Most letters written to Joseph Holmes (1771-1863), shipbuilder and owner from Kingston, Mass., from New Orleans by either Isaiah Chase or Peter Hanson. Letters discuss financial transactions made through the New England Bank in Boston and ships used to transport the acquired commodities out of New Orleans.   • Jackson, Willie, 1889-, interviewee. Oral history interview. 1993. 1 sound cassette (45 minutes), Index (3 pages). Location: L:4700.0282. Resident of Four Corners, an unincorporated community south of Franklin, St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. Jackson and his daughter, Emma Dell Peters, lived on Sterling Plantation; Jackson's grandparents were slaves. Jackson describes his childhood in Four Corners, work cultivating and harvesting sugarcane, and raising crops with his parents. He describes early transportation by horse, foot, and boat; churches in the area; and life on Sterling Plantation. Jackson also describes credit at the plantation store; illnesses; marriage customs; gambling on the card game 'Kotch'; use of French language; French language work songs; and schooling.   • Jacobs, A. J. (Andrew Jay), 1852-1927. Papers, 1867-1927 (bulk 1867-1897). .3 linear ft. (7 items; 1 vol.). Location: U:238, H:22. Born in Clinton, Louisiana, and raised in Girard, Richland Parish, Louisiana. Jacobs attended LSU, and throughout his adult life he was employed by railroad companies. He married Adelaide Elizabeth Bohne in 1881 and they had five daughters. Two letters written by Jacobs while a student at LSU comment on General Sherman's visit to campus and on political and farming conditions in Richland Parish. Three letters (1897) to his daughter Louise, in Louisville, reflect Jacobs' paternal interest. Included is a 1927 memorium to Jacobs from a Louisville and Nashville Railroad publication providing entries regarding Jacobs' work and trips, and including poems, articles, and anecdotes. Fragments of Jacobs' Civil War diaries describe his participation in the siege and capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Roster of soldiers in the 30th Ohio Infantry Regiment, Co A, shows cause of death or discharge. Included is a typescript giving detailed accounts of military maneuvers, battle engagements, transportation of troops, military operations, and the organization of Company A. Six detailed letters addressed to Anna Kellogg were written during her mother and sister’s Mississippi steamboat trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. Letters discuss the trip itself and ultimately their stay in New Orleans, including places they visited, people they met, and their impressions. 15 letters addressed to John B. Minden, Louisiana, attorney, judge, Louisiana Supreme Court justice, and Louisiana governor. Papers include office files, personal correspondence, speeches, photographs, scrapbooks, political campaign materials, and newspaper clippings. The collection pertains to politics, the Democratic Party and Robert Kennon's political career, particularly his term as governor (1952-1956).
