Joshua Gilman Hawkes of Lynnfield, Mass., served in the 52nd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and took part in the occupation of Baton Rouge and the siege of Port Hudson. This collection consists of transcriptions of letters written by Hawkes from Louisiana describing his encampment in Baton Rouge in January-March, participation in the Teche campaign of April-May, and the siege of Port Hudson in June-July 1863.
