Andrews, George L. (George Leonard), 1828-1899. Papers, 1863-1865. 9 items. Location: Misc:A. Union brigadier general in the Civil War. Andrews was appointed commander of the Department of the Gulf in 1863 and assumed command of the Port Hudson, Louisiana, post in 1864. Correspondence from Andrews to his wife deals with the surrender of Port Hudson (1863) and his duties as commander of the post. Andrews, James M. Papers, 1846-1892. .25 linear ft. (103 items; 1 ms. vol., 1 printed vol.). Location: U:6. Farmer of Clinton, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. In the 1840s he was a member of the Johnson Guards, Andrew Jackson Regiment, as part of the Texas Army of Occupation. Papers include correspondence, legal documents, poems, nursery price lists, home recipes and remedies, tax and merchandise receipts, Confederate bonds, and the succession accounts of Mrs. Louisa Andrews. Correspondence includes letters from James' father discussing relatives, local affairs, and crop conditions in Clinton. Letters from his daughter describe economic conditions in Amite, Louisiana. Letters received by Andry's daughter Rosa from his sons describe their participation in the Battle of Shiloh, campaigns in Kentucky, and skirmishes at Camp Beauregard in the Civil War. Voices in the Storm: Hurricane Katrina Survivors in Pointe Coupee Parish

These interviews were sponsored by the Julien Poydras Museum and Arts Council and were conducted in 2007, just two years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans residents who relocated to Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana, after Katrina discuss their unique perspectives and experiences of the storm, recount their struggles with evacuating, displacement, loss, and dealing with the state and federal systems in place such as FEMA, the Red Cross, and the Louisiana Recovery Authority. Interviewees speak of their lives after the hurricane in Pointe Coupee Parish, and how they started over, developed a new sense of community, and regained stability.
