Description
Anonymous sermons, circa 1800-1850. 27 items. Location: Misc:A. This collection consists of 16 unsigned manuscript sermons, each sewn individually at the spine, probably from the first half of the 19th century. They comment on both Old and New Testament texts and include ones on the biblical injunction for wives to submit to their husbands and the place of elders in the church. Other writings include five small groups of questions on the nature of God and Christ followed by answers challenging Socinian arguments. Other manuscripts concern the basics of syllogism and desirable human attributes. A handwritten poem, "The Dying Saint," and a Presbyterian tract, "Sin Our Enemy and God Our Friend," are also included. Mss. 4087.

Anonymous stock notebook, 1871. 1 notebook. Location: 31:. A notebook with the words "stock taking, August 27th, 1871" on the inside cover, written by an anonymous author. The notebook contains information on the stock of clothing available to the author separated by types and colors. The book tracks the number, size and price of items, and is thus probably a stock book for a clothing store. Prices are summed in three columns at the bottom of pages, possibly indicating a pound/shilling/pence monetary system. Types of clothing listed in the notebook include flannels, linens, black silks, white cotton, hosiery, gloves, ribbons, jackets, furs, umbrellas, and other items. The author makes two trips, one from August 11, 1845 to September 3, 1845 and the second from October 5, 1847 to October 15, 1847. Both trips begin with a train ride from Richmond to London on the Great North of England Railway. Visits to sites such as Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, and the Royal Polytechnic Institution are described, as are meals and visitations with friends.
