Shelly served for nine months and was stationed primarily in Louisiana. Diary entries discuss Shelly's sea voyage from New York to Louisiana; his work in the Quartermaster department; his arrival at Lafourche; guerrilla activity in the area; the sound of fighting at Port Hudson; and the capture and parole of his company.
