These records consist of communications, leaflets, and newsletters documenting the organization of the East Baton Rouge Parish Association of Educators in the summer of 1978; a failed tax election on January 20, 1979, and a successful one the following May 19 for the purpose of granting pay raises for school employees; and a two-week strike for collective bargaining by East Baton Rouge Parish schoolteachers and maintenance workers in March 1979. Allen, William M. Correspondence, 1858-1863. 22 items. Location: E:3. Farmer of Holmesville, Pike County, Mississippi. His sister, Letty, and her husband, John Houston, owned a farm in Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana. William and his brother Felix were Confederate soldiers in the Mississippi Volunteers. Pre-Civil War letters from Houston discuss farming conditions, his advocacy of secession, and local social events. Civil War letters to Allen describe skirmishes in Kentucky and Louisiana, and war news such as the shelling of Port Hudson, Louisiana. Family affairs, illness and remedies, and attendance at the New Orleans School of Medicine are other topics in the letters. Memoire : L'Etude des Sons du Patois Negre Louisianais, 1927-1928. 1 manuscript volume. Location Y:85. Judith Major was a public school teacher and later professor emeritus of French at Louisiana State University. This study, conducted by Major, examines the phonetics and pronunciation of the "patois negre louisianais," a French creole spoken by African Americans in Louisiana. Major utilizes an artificial palate and documents the sounds and movements of the mouth, using diagrams and photographs, while pronouncing certain words. Mss. 5081.
