While employed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Percy Viosca documented the coastal Louisiana landscape between 1921 and 1932. He traveled the state for his work that included mosquito control; riparian and marshland studies; flood control; taxonomic work with native Louisiana irises, newts, and snakes; culture of crawfish; and environmental impact of oil refinery practices. The images in this collection document locations on or near the Louisiana coast and a few sites inland. All images refer to water quality, water control, or environmental conditions affecting water quality. Mss. 4948.

Comprised of official congressional files that document the political career of U.S. Senator Edward James Gay III. Files consist of correspondence, legal documents, and printed material pertaining to political campaigns, state and national elections, political patronage, legislative bills, Dept. of Agriculture, construction of levees by the Mississippi River Commission, and the participation in elections and political support of African-Americans. Legislative correspondence discusses pending bills concerning pensions, tariffs, health of rural populations, the creation of the Department of Education, and the transportation, storage and marketing of livestock. Files also contain selected subject materials relative to the American Legion bonus (1920), cotton, sugar, League of Nations (1919-1920), the United States Post Office, railroads, women's suffrage, and U. Boyd and a sugar chemist and professor. Papers relate to Boyd's position as a sugar chemist at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad, British West Indies. Two broadsides pertain to the U.S.' military control of the Dominican Republic during Woodrow Wilson's administration. Taussig, Charles William. Collection, 1667-1922. 1 linear foot. Location: 111:22, OS:T. Charles W. Taussig was an author and businessman. He served as the chairman of the board of Sucrest Corporation (formerly the American Molasses Company) of New York, New York. The collection contains manuscripts and printed materials pertaining to the planting, production, and processing of sugarcane; domestic and international trade and commerce in sugar, molasses, and rum; the slave trade and slave labor. Spalding, Edward. Letter book, 1820. 1 item. Location: MISC:S. Shipping merchant and slave trader from Bristol, Rhode Island. Letter book contains handwritten copies of letters written by Spalding while in Trinidad, Cuba. Most letters are addressed to Jacob Babbitt & Co. in Bristol, Rhode Island. Letters discuss market conditions for sugar and molasses; the loading of cargo and the shipment of goods and major exports; the arrival of slave ships in the harbor; and the slave trade in the West Indies. Kerr, E. W. Papers, 1898-1951 (bulk 1925-1949). Approximately 12.5 linear ft. Location: 77:22-34, OS:K. Baton Rouge engineer. Kerr was an LSU professor of mechanical engineering (1905-1916), an efficiency engineer for the Cuba Cane Sugar Corporation of Havana, Cuba (1916-1931), and a consultant to southwest Louisiana sugar factories (1935-1949). Papers include correspondence, technical data and notes, blueprints and related printed items documenting Kerr's career in the sugar industry. Meeker Sugar Refining Company. Records, 1911-1916. 2 volumes. Location: 53:13. The Meeker Sugar Refinery was located in Meeker, Louisiana, and began operating at the end of 1911. Built and formed by Chicago investors, the refinery was the central factory for Rapides and Avoyelles Parish sugar farmers. Unlike other sugar mills, it had the ability to process sugar cane into white sugar. The refinery closed in 1981. Meeker Sugar Refining Company records include a cash book and a journal. Entries include many transactions with the Chicago area office and area sugar farmers. Early entries also document construction of the company's buildings in 1911 and 1912, including the boarding house, laboratory, and office building. Mss. 4011.
