Attorney, banker, state legislator representing Caddo Parish (1920-1924), and Shreveport public servant (1930-1966). Collection consists primarily of diaries kept by Tanner (1929-1980), which include news clippings, political cartoons, and some photographs.   • Tennessee Federation of Labor, Records. 99 items (68 items, 1 ms. vol., 30 printed vols., on 2 microfilm reels). Location: Mss. Mf.:T. Labor union closely associated with the Tennessee State Industrial Union Council. It advocated the rights of coal miners and other types of industrial workers. Records consist of minutes of the executive board meetings concerning the Federation's internal affairs, organizational questions, political education, protective labor legislation, conventions, World War II, a proposed merger, and voting records. The Tew family was related to the Goodrich family. Papers include family letters, legal papers, newspaper clippings, and printed items related to Newcomb College. Louisiana State University alumna and press correspondent for United Press International, who covered the Nuremberg Military Tribunals (1946-1949).   • Toland, Bessie. World War II scrapbooks, 1941-1949. 6 v. Location: A:36. School teacher of Jeanerette, Iberia Parish, Louisiana. Scrapbooks contain correspondence from soldiers, most of whom were from Iberia Parish. Letters describe military life, combat, and travel. Several letters inquire about family and friends. Scrapbooks contain clippings from Louisiana newspapers that provide biographical profiles of area servicemen and news about war casualties.   • U.S. Army. Thirtieth Division. Souvenir booklet, 1918. 3 items. Location: E-74. Souvenir booklet recounts the military activities of the 30th Division in World War I. Included t are transcripts of letters written by military officials and the mayor of Busigny, France, a hand-drawn map of the Hindenburg Line; and a cartoon depicting the consternation of German troops reeling from the assault of the 30th. A native Hungarian who served as a professor at the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy and an Episcopalian minister in New Orleans. Contains correspondence, printed items, personal papers and photographs related to the professional and family life of Vallas and his descendants. Mother of Clyde Wendell Varnado, a lieutenant in the 35th Infantry of the U.S. Army; and of Samuel Ross Varnado, captain of Company L of the 325th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces. Collection includes items related to an insurance claim against the U.S. Army; photographs of Clyde and Samuel; two military crosses from the United Daughters of the Confederacy; discharge papers; and, a woven basket.   • Varnado, Samuel Ross, 1881-1931. Papers, 1917-1979 (bulk 1917-1937). .3 linear ft. (30 items, 5 printed vols.). Location: A:54. Captain of Company L, 325th Infantry of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Varnado was wounded in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and was a patient in a veterans hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. Papers include letters written by Varnado around the time of the Meuse-Argonne battle, and documents and items related to Varnado's military service. Memos sent to directors and supervisors of W.P.A. projects in Louisiana pertaining to personnel, employment regulations, preparation of annual reports, conversion of W.P.A. projects to wartime purposes, and operation and administration of programs. Projects included are the Writers' Project, Shoe Repair Project, Music Project, Arts and Crafts Projects, Nursery School Project, and many others.   • Weigel, Henry S. and family. Letters, 1942-1944. 1.5 linear ft. Location: 5:26. Officer in the U.S. Army Infantry Corps in World War II, and resident of Amite, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Weigel's letters pertain to his military training; his wartime service in England; the progress of the war in Europe and Africa; and reactions to the Allied invasion of France in 1944. Letters of his wife, Merle Elizabeth Morrison Weigel, concern civilian life in Amite, rationing, wartime civilian service activities, social life, and child rearing.   • White, Bernice B. Photograph album, circa 1941-1942. 0.1 linear ft. Location: T:66. Nurse in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Photograph album (all pages are loose) depicts life for U.S. Army nurses and soldiers at Camp Beauregard and possibly Camp Livingston in Rapides Parish and Grant Parish, Louisiana. Black and white photographic prints of note show troops marching (pages 1-2), nurses posing in front of airplanes (page 1-2), nurses posing in front of a Red Cross truck (page 4), nurses and soldiers posing in front of a Regal Beer truck (pages 4 and 7), a soldier suffering from the effects of poison ivy (page 7), the Camp Beauregard water tower (page 8), nurses outside of the Camp Beauregard Club (page 10), and other scenes of camp life. His great-uncle, John Boylston Hazard, served as Captain of the 24th Alabama Infantry, Company I during the Civil War. Papers include correspondence, manuscripts, and printed material documenting Wildman's career in teaching and writing. Manuscripts consist of novels, short stories, essays, and poems, both published and unpublished. Diaries and personal correspondence describe Wildman's military service during WWII, as well as that of John Boylston Hazard during the Civil War. For further information, see online catalog.
