Roy, V. L. (Victor Leander), 1871-1968. Volumes, 1894-1913 (bulk 1894-1904). 7 vols. Location: H:12. Native of Mansura, Louisiana, an early graduate of LSU, and a Louisiana educator for nearly forty-six years. Roy was Louisiana's first agriculture agent. He formed the Corn Club, a youth agriculture group which developed into the 4-H club. Collection consists of Roy's personal diary and notebooks. Entries in the diary are concerned primarily with his activities in New Orleans, and his attendance at Tulane Graduate School, Marksville Academy, and Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Russell, J. (John), 1793-1863. Letter, 1849 May 13. 1 letter. Location: Misc. John Russell was principal of Spring Hill Academy in East Feliciana Parish, La., for eight years, during which time he was also superintendent of public schools in the parish. Russell in Clinton, La., writes his young son, Francis I. Russell, in Bluffdale, Ill., describing his work as parish school superintendent, the outbreak of cholera in New Orleans and other parts of Louisiana, the beginnings of the school system in East Feliciana Parish, flooding on the Mississippi River, and how he pines for his family and is anxious to return home once his term expires. Salisbury Plantation: papers, 1858-1900 (bulk 1894). 3 items, including 2 vols. Location: Misc:S, M:18. Salisbury Plantation was located near Woodville, Wilkinson County, Mississippi. A plantation record book contains accounts of payments made to laborers for cotton picked and work in turnip patches, as well as purchases made by laborers and crop estimates. Includes a school notebook of Arthur Crisfield of Maryland and a letter from Seymoura Scudder to Mrs. Shepherd of Salisbury Plantation commenting on house guests and plans for a trip to Tennessee. Scouten, Arthur Hawley. Papers, 1934-1992. 0.2 linear ft. 18:4. Arthur Hawley Scouten, a writer and scholar, attended Louisiana State University, where he received his B.A. (1935), M.A. (1938), and Ph.D. (1942) in English. During the 1930's, he worked as an assistant in the LSU Athletic Department, managing Tiger Stadium during home football games. Scouten went on to teach at the University of Pennsylvania from 1947-1980. His research interests included Shakespeare, American literature, and 18th-century British satire. Papers consist of correspondence, printed items, and photographs documenting Scouten's career. Correspondence relates primarily to his work in the academic profession. There are also several letters from Russell Long. Later letters to his son, Lee, recount his memories of Robert Penn Warren, Cleanth Brooks, and James Monroe Smith at LSU; and managing Tiger Stadium. Printed items consist of programs for professional conferences, news clippings, a 1935 voter's registration card, and several LSU football field passes from the 1930's. Photographs include a signed photo of Russell Long as a student, construction of a building at LSU in 1936, and several images of Scouten. Mss. 5049.

Soldier, president of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning, and Union general in the Civil War. John Eaton Tourtellotte was his military aide-de-camp. Sherman's letters to Colonel Bingham, Charles Jones, and Mrs. Carpenter relate to his command of the Department of the Tennessee, his public appearances and social activities following his retirement from the army, and his plans to publish his memoirs. Included are three letters to Tourtellotte discussing Sherman's final tour of duty in the Northwest, a proposed overland to Vancouver, and the final illness and internment of Ulysses S. Grant. The first letter states that Sherman's position in Louisiana is stable and that he will remain. A second letter reflects the political environment in Louisiana just prior to the Civil War. He comments that secession is imminent, and he states that he will not act inconsistent with his allegiance to the United States government" (Dec. 1, 1860).
