Property was obtained through a public auction by Beard, Calhoun & Company in New Orleans. Lots were located in the Borough of Freeport, formerly called Bouligny, in Jefferson Parish. Mss. 5352.

Edward Spalding, a merchant from Bristol, Rhode Island, was involved in the slave trade in Cuba and acted as agent for Jacob Babbitt and the DeWolf family. Miller, a private in the U.S. Army stationed at Camp Claiborne in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, during World War II, to his fiancée and later wife Dorothy Northrup in Rochester, N.Y. Most of the materials pertain to the betrothal, marriage, and long distance relationship sustained by Miller and Northrup during this time.   • Mills, John. Letters, 1795, 1807. 2 items. Location: MISC:M. Planter and merchant of West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, founder of Bayou Sara, and a leader of the West Florida Rebellion. In letters to Gilbert Jackson of New York, John Mills refers to a slave insurrection and the indigo harvest (1795). He discusses the treatment of slaves, destruction of the cotton crop by the cut worm, and the considerable amount of commerce on the Mississippi River (May 19, 1807). Mills discusses his political and civic experience including his announcement to run for secretary of state and his views on the responsibilities of the office.
