  • Morris, Martin. Correspondence, 1918, 1932, 1952. 13 items. Location: Misc. M. Native of Napoleonville, Louisiana, served as a corporal in the United States Army in September 1918. Ten World War I letters written by Martin Morris to members of his family in Napoleonville, Louisiana. In his letters, Morris discusses his health, military life and playing in the 812th Infantry Band. He comments that in some respects the Army treats a black man equal to a white man (Sept. 7, 1918). He mentions an outbreak of influenza in Chicago, and he reports that a quarantine had been enforced at Camp Grant due to the outbreak of influenza (Sept. 26, 1918). Willie Morris' draft card (Sept. 12, 1918) and an empty envelope addressed to him (Sept. 30, 1952) are also included. A letter from L. R. Jackson, of Houston, Texas, to his brother-in law, Joe Green, in Winston, Texas concerns rent and digging for a treasure (July 30, 1932). Mss. 3699

Thomas Henry Morris moved from Wales to Louisiana and married Mary White Sibley in 1854. She was born in Rapides Parish, Louisiana, and her family owned Mount Elon Plantation. Papers consist of family correspondence, including that of Mary Wells Sibley and Mary White Morris; Civil War correspondence of Thomas H. Morris and others; and letters from the Morris sons describing life at a school in North Carolina, 1878-1879.   • Morse, E. A. Account books, 1863-1865. 4 volumes, 1 photograph. Location: H:3, MISC:M. Account books and letter book kept by Capt. E. A. Morse for the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad Company and the New Orleans, Opelousas, and Great Western Railroad Company while they were operated under the control of the United States Army at the latter part of the Civil War. Letter book contains copies of orders, circulars, and published notices issued by Morse and C. W. Greene, Assistant Superintendent. Additionally, there is a photograph of a Lafourche locomotive. Letter to Morse's father discusses inoculation against smallpox, diplomatic relations with France, national presidential candidates, and the education of his son Samuel Finley Breese Morse.   • Moss, Martha, 1827-1859. Diary, 1853-1870. 1 volume, 3 items. Location J:20, MISC:M. Diary of Martha Moss, a New Orleans Sabbath school teacher. In it, she discusses her classes and students, including her disappointment that one of her students “has embraced the religion of the Romish church” (June 18, 1855). Moss also recounts her charitable work, shopping excursions in New Orleans, her reading habits, pieces she has written or plans to write for various periodicals, and the death of her younger sister in February 1855.   • Motte Family Papers, 1862-1921. 41 items, 3 v. Location: Misc.: M. A family of French and African American heritage in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. The collection contains personal and business papers of the Motte family of St. Landry Parish. Personal papers include a summary of birth and baptismal records for the children born to Blaize Motte, Sr. (October 15, 1862) and family letters. Some letters are in French. A French edition of a Catholic missal contains genealogical notes, v. 1 (1864). Business papers include a description of a tract of land purchased in St. Landry Parish (Aug. 17, 1869) and two store ledgers, v. 1(1865-1869; v. 2 (1867-1868). Ledger entries are in French. There is also a memorandum notebook (1897-1903), and several parish tax receipts (1906-1921). Mss. 3627.

Copies of his will, the last donation, and the first petition in the succession proceedings, which establish the date of his death as February 12, 1885. Alexander Mouton was a representative for Lafayette Parish in the Louisiana Legislature (1828-1837), a U.S. Senator for Louisiana (1837-1842), governor of Louisiana (1842-1846), and president of the Louisiana state secession convention in 1861. Mouton at Ile Copal Plantation near Lafayette, La., briefly recounts his political career and muses that he may be the only surviving senator from Andrew Jackson's administration. Mss. 4130.

Mouton worked for the Southern Pacific and Illinois Central railroads, the Moore-McCormack Steamship line, and the New Orleans Dock Board. The bulk of the collection consists of invitations, public relations materials, and photographs pertaining to Mouton's speaking engagements and his involvement in clubs and organizations. Scrapbooks (1929-1965) contain clippings. Diaries (1959-1972), some written in Salinas County, Arkansas, discuss gardening, participation in church and recreational functions, speaking engagements, family news, and the weather.
