The volume, from the Orleans Parish Board of Assessors, contains the New Orleans property tax rolls for the 4th Municipal District, Assessment District 11, volume 2 for the year of 1857. The rolls give the location and size of each property, the name of the owner, the value of the real estate, and the number of slaves on the property and their value. Mss. 5263.

He comments on a highly animated debate among senators Preston, Calhoun, Ewing, Clay, Benton, Clayton, and Porter. He also describes gifts given to the United States by foreign countries. Newcomb, located in Starkey, NY. The first document is a receipt for Alva Wright dated May 30, 1848 purchasing 20 calf skins from H. B. Newcomb. The second document is a ledger dated February 28, 1851 of purchases and debts for Miss Mary Wolcott from H. B. Newcomb accrued from October 11, 1849 to November 26, 1850. The third document is a ledger of purchases and debts for Spicer & Church from H. B. Newcomb dated August 21, 1850 to December 12, 1851. Mss. 822.
  • Newell, Robert Aiken, b. 1819. Papers, 1841-1887 (bulk 1863-1864). 250 items. Location: U:235, 65:. Irish immigrant and owner of Oak Grove, Cheneyville, Louisiana. The collection consists chiefly of personal papers of Newell and family. Personal correspondence of the 1850s and 1860s reflects the plantation and social activities of the Newell, Forman, and Keary families. Some letters were written from Newell to his wife during a trip to his home in Ireland (1859). Civil War letters from family in the 16th Louisiana Infantry and 8th Louisiana Heavy Artillery at camps in the state discuss the quality of Louisiana conscripts, provisions, the Red River campaign, Vicksburg, and deserters.
