Lawyer and judge of the Court of Errors and Appeals of New Orleans. His son, Francis T. Nicholls, was governor of Louisiana.   • Nichols, Irby C. and family. Papers, 1862-1972. 15 linear ft. Location: 45:15-20, 44:26-27, OS:N. Louisiana State University professor of mathematics. His wife, Pauline Wright Nichols, studied art and design at Newcomb School of Art and the Chicago Art Institute. After they married she continued her design work. Correspondence, printed items, financial papers, legal documents, memoirs, journals, pedagogical materials, and photographs document the professional, business, and personal lives of the Nichols family, primarily Irby C. and Pauline Nichols.   • Nickerson, E. L. (Edwin L.). Letters, 1862 July 7-November 28. 5 items. Location: Misc:N. Union soldier stationed at the Custom House in New Orleans during the Civil War. He served under General Benjamin Franklin Butler before he began drilling at camps Kearney and Stearns in the Reserve Brigade, under Brigadier General Godfrey Weitzel. Letters describe Nickerson's experiences at the Custom House, and in military training in Camp Kearney and Camp Stearns. Mentioned are loyalty oaths taken by local citizens; living conditions and illnesses in camp; and his opinion of commanding officers. For further information, see online catalog. Mss. 3326.

The collection consists of a photographic print of Jacob Verberg, a Louisiana landscape architect, and four of his employees (circa 1910); a copy of Verberg's obituary (1942); and a history of the role of sawmills in the development of Canton and Madison County, Miss.   • Nobles Family Papers, 1825-1990 (bulk 1863-1876). 0.3 linear ft. Location: V:1. The Nobles and related families were farmers of Louisiana, Texas and Alabama. Levi Nobles was a Confederate soldier with the 57th Alabama Infantry, married to Mary Elizabeth Massey. The collection relates to the Nobles and related Henry and Massey families. Early papers consist of photocopies and transcriptions of Henry family correspondence and legal documents (1825-1851). Papers include a receipt for the slave, Isaac (March 6, 1835). Civil War and post-war letters are those of the Nobles family, written primarily to Mary E. Nobles and Lou "Babe" Nobles. They relate Levi Nobles' wartime activities and his instructions to Mary on the use of their land (1863). Letters also relay condolences to Mary on the death of Levi (July 5, 15, 18, 1863). Post war letters are written from family and friends in Texas and her brother in Alabama. They discuss family matters, health and crop production. Mary's brother comments on the participation of African Americans in the presidential election (Dec. 9, 1876) and her sister Sarah Smith comments on race relations in Texas (April 1878). Several letters relate to the courtship of Lou "Babe" Nobles. The collection also contains Robert Henry family genealogical material (1979, 1990, undated). Mss. 5163.

  • Nolan, Philip, 1771-1801. Papers, 1791-1800. 3 items. Location: Vault. Native of Belfast, Ireland, and contraband trader in the Louisiana Territory and Texas. Nolan was closely associated with General James Wilkinson and may have been reared in his family. A letter to Nolan by General Wilkinson from Frankfort, Kentucky, relates Wilkinson's misfortune and requests Nolan's assistance. A letter from Nolan to Bernard Lintot pertains to Nolan's financial status and his wish to marry Lintot's daughter. Included is a list of horses sold by Nolan to individuals in Natchez. Norman was a resident of Alexandria, Louisiana; Dr. N. Philip Norman was a resident of New York City. Collection contains photographic prints, books, periodicals, newspapers, correspondence, copper plates, framed maps and pictures, blueprints, and other records concerning steamboats, the navigation of the Red River and lower Mississippi River. They relate to Louisiana parishes and regions, travel in the South, and General Banks' Red River Campaign. Periodicals include 'Waterways Journal' (1932-1967); Waterways Magazine (1942-1951); Steamboat Bill, the journal of the Steamboat Historical Society of America (1961-1969); and S & D Reflector, published by the Sons and Daughters of Pioneer Rivermen (1964-1969).   • Norris, A. Wilson Scrapbook, 1886-1893. 1 volume. V:68. Alexander Wilson Norris, a lawyer born in Lewistown, PA, served in the Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. His adopted nephew, Alexander Wilson Norris, Jr., was also a lawyer who served in the military. Scrapbook compiled by A. Wilson Norris Jr. titled "Pen Pictures of the War, written by A. Wilson Norris for 'The Philada News' and General Articles," consists of newspaper clippings of columns written by his father, mostly accounting his experiences during the Civil War. Mss. 5230. 
  • Norris, Harry. Letter Book, 1746-1748. 1 letter book. Location: 31:. Captain, and later admiral, of the Royal Navy of Great Britain. A book of letters sent to Captain Harry Norris between the years of 1746 and 1748. The letters contain orders commanding him to move his ship to specific locations, details of the line of battle and signals of battle for different naval engagements, instructions on provisioning his ship, orders and instructions for the discharge of members of his crew, and other orders pertaining to the operation of his ship in the service of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. Letters of Norris to his parents and friends in England after his arrival in the United States.
