Attorney, author, composer, and planter of Ancient Domain Plantation in St. James Parish, Louisiana, and of New Orleans. Collection includes letters, bills and receipts, and photographs, chiefly of Jefferson College in Convent, Louisiana, which Peytavin attended. A brochure describes the residents and history of Jefferson and several other parishes. Attorney, author, composer, and planter of Ancient Domain Plantation in St. James Parish, Louisiana, and of New Orleans. Business and professional papers concern the operation of Peytavin's plantation and law practice. Personal papers include correspondence, manuscript copies of poems, songs, speeches, and historical sketches. Collection also includes programs for New Orleans theater, opera, and concert performances. Most of the legal papers before 1843 are in French, as is some of the post-1885 correspondence. Sugar planter, businessman, politician, and steamboat captain of St. Mary Parish, Louisiana. Papers and account books of Captain Pharr and records of the J. N. Pharr and Sons, Limited reflect the operations of all the Pharr family holdings including several plantations, Glenwild Sugar Refinery, the Fairview Dairy, and the Pharr Line. Letter to Confederate President Jefferson Davis advises him to cultivate popular affection; discusses the poor morale of the Confederate army during the retreat from Corinth, Mississippi; and mentions the popularity of several Confederate generals. Phelan also mentions the attitudes of military commanders; predicts a major federal attack on Chattanooga; discusses crop damage; and comments on government appointments. Gardner of the American Agricultural Association in New York City giving a thorough report of the improving state of agriculture in Mississippi. The photograph album of a Victorian house in New Orleans contains photographs of a house located at Pelican and Elmira Avenue in the Algiers section of New Orleans, Louisiana. The pictures in the album depict the exterior and interior of the house and its residents. The family members in the pictures are known only by their first names: Eugene, Mollie, and Patricia. Included in the front of the album is a note \"Emmie from Mollie and Eugene.\" The house, its residents\' clothing, and its interior furnishings are all in the Victorian style. The house was built in the late 1890s or early 1900s. The first resident listed for the residence appears in known records beginning in 1903 and is a physician named Arthur J. Babin. Mss. 5109.

  • Pickels, George Dunford. Papers, 1874-1879. .25 linear ft. (62 items). Location: A:5. Educator of Holmesville, Louisiana. Pickels was an original member of the Louisiana Educational Publishing Co., Ltd., Board of Directors. By 1892 he had become editor and proprietor of the official journal of the Louisiana Teachers Association. Manuscript copies of poems, essays, and stories, some of which were published, reflect Pickel's creativity and philosophy.
