Award winning scrapbook consists of clippings of news stories from various Louisiana newspapers describing pageants, plays, musical performances, and other events held in celebration of the tercentenary in Louisiana high schools. Also included are articles describing the history of various Louisiana high schools and observances of the tercentenary in Jeanerette, La., Bessie Toland's hometown.. Scrapbooks contain correspondence from soldiers, most of whom were from Iberia Parish. Letters describe military life, combat, and travel. Several letters inquire about family and friends. Scrapbooks contain clippings from Louisiana newspapers that provide biographical profiles of area servicemen and news about war casualties.   • Tower, Eli. Letter, 1866 April 8. 1 item. Location: Misc:T. Letter written by Tower to his cousin relating family matters and his own good employment prospects. He also comments on people moving to Brazil and Mexico because of poor conditions in the postwar South. Tower also mentions an outbreak of small pox in Mobile, Alabama, and throughout the South, cholera in another area of Alabama, and an expected outbreak of yellow fever in Mobile and New Orleans. Diary provides a daily account of local weather conditions in New Orleans, the arrival and departure of cargo ships, cotton and sugar prices, the cotton trade, local military and political celebrations, Tower's attendance at Protestant church services, concerts and opera performances, and prominent visitors to New Orleans. Entries for November and December of 1845 describe the trial of Dr. W.A. Scott, minister of the First Presbyterian Church in New Orleans. Entries pertain to trips to New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the religious and social life of the slaves, and holiday celebrations. Collection includes a photocopy of a section of the Persac map (1858).
