Letter details troop movements from May 10 to May 27, including federal attacks on Port Hudson. Papers consist of one thirty-six page, anecdotal document comprised of notes taken by Jesse Walker (LSU professor) during conversations over coffee he had with Fred B. Kniffen from 1975-1993. Fred Kniffen was a Boyd professor at Louisiana State University who is credited with founding the LSU geography and anthropology program. This collection of notes is a multifaceted look at the personal life and early years of Kniffen. He makes frequent mention of fellow colleagues Richard J. Russell, Henry V.   • Wall Family. Papers, 1829-1921. 0.2 linear ft. Location: V:47. Collection is primarily correspondence between members of the Wall family of Clinton, Louisiana, particularly Mary Winans Wall and her son, Wesley Wall. Much of the correspondence relates to the family's experiences during the Civil War, including the deaths of three family members and the long imprisonment of Wesley at Camp Douglas in Chicago. Letters discuss personal news, mutual friends, daily life in Clinton, and Mary's efforts to have Wesley released during the Civil War. In addition to the correspondence, there is a school merit certificate, an essay written by Wesley, and a legal document from probate court in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, certifying that Isaac Wall is licensed to officiate marriages.   • Wall, John Q. Letter, 1862. 1 item. Location: Misc:W. Available on microfilm 5735: University Publications of America Confederate Military Manuscripts Series B, Reel 21. Confederate soldier in the Civil War. Wall enlisted as a private in the Pointe Coupee Artillery Battalion (September 1861) in Columbus, Kentucky. He was exchanged as a prisoner of war in November 1862. Wall's letter to his sister, Mrs. Pauline R. Setton of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, describes his capture on Island 10 and his imprisonment at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. For further information, see online catalog. Mss. 893.
  • Wall, Mary B. (Mary Berthelot). Papers, 1887-1990. 14 linear ft. Location: 91:23-29, OS:W. Louisiana poet, a founder of the National Federation of the State Poetry Society, and co-founder of the Louisiana State Poetry Society. Mary married Evans Spencer Wall, Jr., also a writer. Correspondence, legal and financial records, poetry, printed items, and photographs documenting Mary B. Wall's life and literary activities from 1911 to 1990. The bulk of the collection consists of Berthelot family correspondence. Also present are a few legal documents of Joseph Albert Berthelot and a family tree for the Welch family.   • Wall-Pettibone Family Papers, 1795-1889. 15 items. Location: A:122. John Wall, an early settler in the Spanish district of Natchez, received land granted by the Spanish in 1795. This land became Richland Plantation in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, later owned by Chauncey Pettibone. The papers document the land ownership of the Wall and Pettibone families. Diary of travels by horseback through northwest Louisiana, then by steamboat down the Red River to New Orleans. Wallace's diary then recounts his travel homeward by Mississippi River steamer, via Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi; Louisville, Kentucky; and Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio.
