Mortgage of slaves of William Webb, Sr. to William Porter, to whom Webb was indebted, and certification of the mortgage by the bureau of mortgages in New Orleans. The mortgage indicates that the slaves mortgaged were Effy, aged 30, Lucinda, aged 26, and Lucinda's two children, Mississippi and Janus, aged ten and six respectively.   • Webre-LeBlanc Family Papers, 1820-1986 (bulk 1912-1936). 0.5 linear ft. Location: 40. The Webre and LeBlanc family members owned and operated many plantations and general stores in south Louisiana. The Desire LeBlanc Plantation was known for producing perique tobacco, and his daughter Alcidie was a sugar farmer with her husband Louis S. Webre. Edward C. Webre was one of the first graduates of the Audubon Sugar Institute, and Frank Sevin worked for the Webre-Steib Co. Ltd. which operated the Golden Ridge Plantation. The Webre-LeBlanc Family Papers consist of correspondence, receipts, photos, ledgers, and genealogy information. These papers document the Webre-LeBlanc family ties and business interactions from 1820 to 1968. Mss. 4145.

  • Weigel, Henry S. and family. Letters, 1942-1944. 1.5 linear ft. Location: 5:26. Officer in the U.S. Army Infantry Corps in World War II, and resident of Amite, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Weigel's letters pertain to his military training; his wartime service in England; the progress of the war in Europe and Africa; and reactions to the Allied invasion of France in 1944. Letters of his wife, Merle Elizabeth Morrison Weigel, concern civilian life in Amite, rationing, wartime civilian service activities, social life, and child rearing.   • Weiss, Seymour. Papers, 1927-1972 (bulk 1930-1960). 11.25 linear ft. Location: 30:38-42, OS:W, Vault:36. Manager and owner of the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. Weiss was a confidant of Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey P. Long, who made the hotel his headquarters. The bulk of the collection consists of circulars announcing speeches and the political positions of Long and other Louisiana politicians. Also present are political cartoons by 'Trist' [Trist Wood] and various campaign items. The collection includes letters of Huey P. Long related to issues of concern to Louisiana citizens and sheet music for 'Every Man a King,' 'Follow Long,' and several other songs, with words by Long. Mss. 4165.

In the article Welles strenuously disagrees with Wickham Hoffman, who had argued that General Benjamin Butler had a prominent role in the planning and execution of the capture of New Orleans by federal troops in 1862. Records of the Court of Claims of the United States pertain to suits filed by James Madison Wells concerning Wells' charges that U.S. forces under the command of General Nathaniel P. Banks illegally confiscated his property and livestock in Rapides Parish during the Red River Expedition of 1864. Records consist of court memos, rulings, dockets, judicial motions, testimonies, and letters associated with congressional cases no. 435, no. 2524, and 10,271, which. Caffee, chair of a committee of the College of Arts and Sciences at Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, La., declining Caffee's invitation to participate in the committee's symposium.
