  • Florance, Ernest T., (Ernest Tours) 1854-1918. Ernest T. Florance papers, 1916-1917. 8 letters. 1 photograph. Location: MISC:F. Ernest Tours Florance (1854-1918) was born in Pass Christian, Mississippi to Benjamin and Rebecca Florance. Florance was educated at Northwick College in London, and Lusher's Academy in New Orleans. He was admitted to the bar in 1875 and practiced law in New Orleans. He was president of the Commercial Law League of America. Florance also served as director of public schools in New Orleans from 1892 to 1898. The Ernest T. Florance Papers contain eight letters from Florance to Mrs. Norman Towne of Evanston, Illinois and one photograph of Florance. Topics discussed in the letters include World War I, New Orleans, Russia, travel, musical performances in New Orleans, art, classic books in Latin, and the Louisiana draft board. Mss. 5110.

Photographs depict geological features in the Florida Parishes of Louisiana and some areas of Mississippi. The collection covers areas near Port Hudson, St. Francisville, Bayou Sara, Jackson, Kentwood, Roseland, Franklinton, Slidell, Varnardo, Hammond, and Covington. One of his sisters, Rebecca McComb Folwell Curtis, lived in Wisconsin; Natchitoches, Louisiana; and Handsboro, Mississippi. Nathaniel B. Folwell was their brother. Correspondence relating family news and activities among various members of the Folwell and Curtis families and some friends. A printed booklet includes several excerpts from the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Navies regarding Nathaniel B. Folwell, who was captured during the Civil War. Doralice Fontane was a composer, and voice, piano, and organ teacher who composed several songs, notably "Give Me Louisiana," and "Let's March Together (People of the World)." The collection consists primarily of letters from Ms. Fontane promoting her music, acknowledgments from various individuals who were given complimentary copies of her song, and sheet music. Hezekiah Ford in Madison County, Mississippi Territory, writes to his brothers describing the difficult journey from Virginia to Mississippi that he just completed with his sister and brother-in-law, musing on what to do with himself next, asking his brothers to conclude his business in Virginia to raise money needed to survive in the wilderness, and remarking on the high prices for slaves and cotton.
