Location: EPHEMERA SUBGROUP II. Major General Benjamin Franklin Butler instituted the enlistment of former slaves into the Union army and later established a wage-labor system on sugar plantations. United States Army 77th Colored Infantry Regiment. Records, 1864-1865. 9 items. Location: OS:U. The 77th Infantry Regiment of the United States Colored Troops was organized on April 4, 1864, from the 5th Corps d'Afrique Infantry. Primarily muster rolls for Company H, providing name, rank, where joined and mustered (most enrolled in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Franklin, Louisiana), record of payment, and comments on status such as present, deserted, or dead and cause of death. The record of enlistment, pay received, and clothing issued for Privates James Jones and Anthony Whitaker of the 13th Infantry Corps d'Afrique are also present. Letters and papers (some copies) pertaining to the land grants in the Quachita River Valley of Louisiana. Ten letters (certified copies, 1806) exchanged between Bastrop and Baron de Carondelet concern land grants in the Quachita River basin (1796-1797); a contract (copy) among Baron de Bastrop, Charles Lynch, and Abraham Morehouse; a conveyance transferring land from Edward Livingston to Robert E. Griffith (1809); and a plat of Bastrop's land holdings drawn by Henry Cassidy (1811). Mss. 504.

Volume contains Landreth's field notes (January-April 1819), created during his survey expedition for live oak and red cedar timber lands in Louisiana, for a commission from the United States Navy. Daily field notes include notations of directions and distances traveled, landmarks sighted, and short narrative descriptions of daily events and people met. A working sugar plantation, Acadia Plantation of Lafourche Parish, Louisiana is comprised of three major properties originally known as Acadia Plantation, St. Brigitte Plantation, and Evergreen Plantation. It was acquired in 1875 by Edward J. Gay, became the residence of Representative Andrew and Mrs. Anna Gay Price. Records are comprised of correspondence, financial and legal documents, printed items, volumes, maps, plats, and photographs. Papers document business and legal affairs of the plantation owners and operators, as well as plantation operations such as sugar cane farming, the crops of tenant farmers on the property, and the planning and development of the plantation lands throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
