  • Latimer, George. Letters, 1836. 6 items. Location: Misc.:L. Sugar merchantof the firm of Latimer & Fernandes in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. These six letters from George A. Latimer and the firm of Latimer & Fernandes to Sidney Mason concern the Puerto Rican sugar trade with the United States. They were written from various locales in Puerto Rico and the Northeastern United States and date from the period Aug. 8-Nov. 26, 1836. Mss. 3858.
  • Latta, Samuel R. (Samuel Rankin). Correspondence, 1861-1862. 1 vol. (containing 35 items). Location: H:21. Captain of the Macon Grays, 13th Tennessee Infantry, during the Civil War. His family lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Letters exchanged by Latta and his wife during his service in Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, and Mississippi. Latta describes his participation in the battles of Belmont and Shiloh. Included are three letters from a brother living in Boston, Massachusetts, and two letters from a school teacher. The letter also describes the situation concerning runaway slaves and treatment of slaves by the Union army. A manuscript fragment of 'Legs joins the cavalry;' and some miscellaneous notes pertaining to Baton Rouge. It also contains a land patent from the United States General Land Office (1875) belonging to Louis Dufilho, a New Orleans resident who was the first certified pharmacist in the United States. The Layssard family resided in northern Rapides Parish, Louisiana; Kate Kingston Boyd Grant, a writer from Grant Parish, was a relation of R. H. Grant and Harriet Grant, the heirs to Harriet Layssard. Collection contains business papers of the Layssard family, but is comprised mostly of the literary writings of Kate K. Grant: unpublished novels, short stories, and plays set in Louisiana; they include information about ante-bellum New Orleans and the Colfax riot of 1873. For further information, see online catalog. Papers contain correspondence, clippings, speeches, government publications, and memorandum books recording Lazaro's service as a U.S. Representative. Political papers reflect his interest in agriculture and the tariff question, state and local politics, and related national matters.
