Letters from Shaw to William Meredith relative to his servant Ceasar, a free African American who had accompanied him to New Orleans.   • Shealy, John N. (John Noah), d. 1862. John N. and Eugenia B. Shealy letters, 1859-1862. 51 items. Location: A:26, H:16. Available on microfilm: UPA Confederate Military Manuscripts Series B, Reel 18. Confederate lieutenant in the 47th Alabama Regiment during the Civil War. John N. Shealy and Eugenia (Jennie) Burson, both of Georgia, wed in 1859; they had two sons. The 1859 correspondence consists of love letters between John and Jennie. The 1862 correspondence, written while Shealy was in field service, describes Confederate soldiers' hardships, illness, and suffering under Stonewall Jackson's command. Shedd was founding secretary of an antislavery society with 40 members organized in Dayton in March 1839. James A. Shedd in Dayton, Ohio, writes to Dr. David Jordan in Piqua, Ohio, giving a full description of a proslavery riot in Dayton on Monday, January 25, 1841. Mss. 4102.

  • Shelly, William. Diary, 1863 January 1-September 23. 1 vol. Location: Misc:S. Union soldier in the 176th New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Shelly served for nine months and was stationed primarily in Louisiana. Diary entries discuss Shelly's sea voyage from New York to Louisiana; his work in the Quartermaster department; his arrival at Lafourche; guerrilla activity in the area; the sound of fighting at Port Hudson; and the capture and parole of his company. Also includes Moses Hooke's armed services appointment (March 11, 1799), an agreement with Secretary of War, Henry Dearborn, for Oliver Ormsby to provide rations to U.S. troops (May 24, 1804), a deed and abstract for Woodstock Plantation, which belonged to Richard Butler, and documents concerning the estates of Richard Butler and Harriet Browder. George Foster Shepley was a colonel in the 12th Maine Infantry Regiment, was appointed a brigadier general in July 1862, was military governor of Louisiana (1862-1864), commanded the military district of eastern Virginia, and served as military governor of Richmond, Virginia (April-July 1865). Shepley in Portland, Maine, writes B. R. Curtis regarding an insurance claim on a vessel trading between Liverpool and Cuba. Mss. 3916.
