Entries report names of American ships, descriptions of cargo, and accounts of individuals including James Monroe and Thomas Pinckney. Slave children cartes-de-visite, 1863-1864. 4 photographs. Location: Misc.:S. Four cartes-de-visite feature images of Caucasian-looking emancipated slave children from the South. The photographs were an effort by the Union military, specifically the Department of the Gulf under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, and various charitable organizations who sold the cartes-de-visite to raise money for the education of former slaves in newly established schools. Another purpose was to inspire sympathy for former slaves and to raise Northern support for the war. Mss. 5319.
