His brother was the writer George Washington Cable. Papers chiefly consist of Cable's published and unpublished poetry and short stories. Cahan's application requests a discharge from the Confederate Army, claiming French citizenship. Erskine Caldwell describes the "Bossier Strip," a stretch of nightclubs along East Texas Street in Bossier City, La., patronized by young airmen from Barksdale Air Force Base and staffed by troubled young women from small towns in the Deep South. Caldwell wrote the piece for the San Francisco Chronicle. Mss. 4196.

Caldwell was a British-born theatre manager who developed and dominated the pioneering theatre of the South and a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives (1848-1856).
