Jenkins, John C. (John Carmichael) and family. Papers, 1837-1900 (bulk 1840-1855). 100 items, 14 volumes. Location: B:66, G:21, OS:J, Vault:72. Experimental agriculturist and horticulturist and resident of Elgin Plantation, Adams County, Mississippi. Personal papers and diary of the Jenkins family. The diary records results of Jenkins' experiments at Elgin, plantation routine, financial transactions, travel, and social and literary activities. Purchases of slaves and health of slaves are noted. Jenkins' account book shows expenditures for the home, family, plantations, and slaves. Correspondence includes Civil War letters from Jenkins' son, a Confederate soldier. Also available on microfiche 2729 (Southern Historical Manuscripts, Plantation Records 1799-1900). Does not include 1846 letter, which was acquired after filming. Description
Carson, John H. Papers, 1854-1976. 4 items, 2 volumes., and 2 microfilm reels (35 mm). Location: 98:, MISC:C, MSS.MF:C, VAULT:4. Carson emigrated from Tennessee to East Texas in 1858. He enlisted in the Texas Partisan Rangers Regiment of the Confederate cavalry in August 1862. After his parole on July 24, 1865, he returned to his family in East Texas. Papers are comprised of two manuscript volumes: a personal narrative recounting his experiences in Louisiana during the Civil War and a record book with a list of expenses incurred during his move to Texas. Other items include his parole certificate, a photograph taken with his wife, Elizabeth, and a photocopy giving a short history and list of officers of Crumps Regiment, Texas Cavalry. Minor and contain letters, maps, photographs, reports, and items reflecting the management, reorganization, and financing of sugar plantations, including the Southdown Plantation, especially during the 1930s. Many materials relate to sugar technology and the revival of the Louisiana sugar industry in the 20th century through the introduction of fungus resistant P.O.J. sugarcane. West Indies land and property records, 1798-1883. 14 items. Location: Map Cage: Map Case 14, Drawers 5-6. Selected public documents reflecting land tenure mainly in the Parish of Vere, Jamaica, principally for George Radcliff, a sugar planter (1809-1839). Other documents pertain to lands in the West Indies and include a conveyance (1798) for the sale of a plantation, slaves, and livestock on the island of Antigua and a mortgage and lease for two coffee plantations in the colony of Berbice, British Guiana (1813). Additionally, one item documents the surrender of the charter of the Levant Company (1825), a group of British merchants trading in the eastern Mediterranean area, particularly with Turkey. British House of Commons. Committee records, 1728-1739. 0.2 linear ft. Location: C:72. Contemporary manuscript copies of documents presented to Parliament aimed at documenting the real and perceived injustices committed by the Spanish against British merchants engaging in trade with the American colonies and the West Indies. Many of the actions taken by Spanish agents against British subjects were used as justification for the conflict known as the War of Jenkins' Ear. Documents include letters of Sir Benjamin Keene, agent of the South Sea Company in Spain; petitions of grievances to Parliament presented before the committee of the House of Commons; and the report of the committee. Leigh, Captain. Diary and correspondence, 1795. 1 volume. Location: MISC:L. Quartermaster general for the British Army stationed at Fort Royal in Martinique during the British occupation of French islands. Diary (January 14-March 13, 1795) kept by Leigh while on the islands of Martinique and Grenada. Entries provide information concerning army and navy procedures relative to the handling of prisoners, the opening of ports to American vessels, the state of the militia at Martinique, the customs of the French people, and the destruction of property caused by French patriots on the island. Included with the diary are copies of two letters, one from Leigh to Sir I. Vaughan (March 13, 1795). Part of the West Indies Collection. Mss. 658.
