Weiss, Seymour. Papers, 1927-1972 (bulk 1930-1960). 11.25 linear ft. Location: 30:38-42, OS:W, Vault:36. Manager and owner of the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans. Weiss was a confidant of Louisiana Governor and U.S. Senator Huey P. Long, who made the hotel his headquarters. The bulk of the collection consists of circulars announcing speeches and the political positions of Long and other Louisiana politicians. Also present are political cartoons by 'Trist' [Trist Wood] and various campaign items. The collection includes letters of Huey P. Long related to issues of concern to Louisiana citizens and sheet music for 'Every Man a King,' 'Follow Long,' and several other songs, with words by Long. Mss. 4165.

Description
Affleck, Thomas. Papers, 1807-1935 (bulk 1842-1868). 12 linear feet, 43 manuscript volumes, 6 printed volumes, 26 microfilm reels. Location: W:110-121, J:25, OS:A, MSS.MF:A. Native of Scotland who established one of the first commercial nurseries in the South and published widely on scientific and agricultural subjects. He also published the Southern Rural Almanac and Plantation Garden Calendar from 1845 to the 1860s. Early papers concern Affleck's family in Scotland. Papers from 1842 to 1859 pertain to the management of Affleck's wife's plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, his commercial nursery, and his service as agricultural editor of several newspapers. Civil War letters by Affleck's sons describe battles, camp life, and troop movements. Post-Civil War papers describe Affleck's agricultural and speculative enterprises. Location: MISC:L. Notarized copies of indentures for Alabama, Louisiana, and Missouri slaves bound for Texas, notarized by William Young Lewis of New Orleans, Louisiana. These were the slaves of the following slaveholders: John James Dillard of Tuscumbia, Alabama; Isaac Turner Tinsley of Pikesville, Alabama; James Routh of Concordia Parish, Louisiana; Patrick Herndon of New Orleans; Gowan Harris of Iberville Parish, Louisiana; Edwin Waller of Palmyra, Missouri; and Samspon Blossman of New Orleans. Indentures give the name, age, and family relationships of the slaves. Mss. 4762.

Madison, Lewis. Certificate of freedman Jim Allen, 1841 March 5. 1 item. Location: Misc:M. Justice of the Peace for Jefferson County, Kentucky. Jim Allen was a freedman. Certificate attesting that Jim Allen was held in the Jefferson County jail as a runaway slave from November 1839-February 1840. The document certifies that Allen had been held and discharged from a New Orleans jail in August 1839, having 'free papers.' The certificate is addressed to B.
