Anonymous traveler's letters, 1882 March 8-13. 2 items. Location: Misc:A. An unidentified traveler writes his son two letters from New Orleans, Louisiana. His March 8, 1882, letter describes his journey by train from Jacksonville, Florida, to New Orleans, complaining of the low state of the countryside and the manners of the poor whites and African-Americans. His March 13, 1882, letter gives a vivid description of New Orleans, including news of levee breaks and flooding on the Mississippi River. Mss. 3858.

Description
Anonymous sermons, circa 1800-1850. 27 items. Location: Misc:A. This collection consists of 16 unsigned manuscript sermons, each sewn individually at the spine, probably from the first half of the 19th century. They comment on both Old and New Testament texts and include ones on the biblical injunction for wives to submit to their husbands and the place of elders in the church. Other writings include five small groups of questions on the nature of God and Christ followed by answers challenging Socinian arguments. Other manuscripts concern the basics of syllogism and desirable human attributes. A handwritten poem, "The Dying Saint," and a Presbyterian tract, "Sin Our Enemy and God Our Friend," are also included. Mss. 4087.

Stocking of Chatham, Connecticut, describing his accounting work, his relationship with his superiors, the gift of an instrument shaped like a guitar with a bellows for the left hand and keys for the right, foreign members of the city's orchestra who board at the same hotel as he, his efforts to learn the trumpet, and his friendship with Louis Parocheau.
