Blanchard certify the election of presidential electors for Louisiana. Those eight electors certify that they cast eight abstaining votes for president of the United States and eight votes for Benjamin Gratz Brown of Missouri for vice president. Mss. 3921.

Brown in Lexington, Ky., writes Thomas Todd, a Justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, near Frankfort, expressing his gratitude for the support of his intelligent friends in Kentucky in the face of slanderous comments from his enemies. Daggett & Enoch Price, pending in the circuit court at St. Louis, Mo. The lawsuit concerned the collision of the steamboats Courtland and St. Louis on the Mississippi River somewhere above the Claiborne County-Jefferson County, Miss., line in October 1830. Diary notes the arrival of federal troops, number and type of Union vessels on local waterways, and the presence of runaway slaves and guerrillas. Elder describes the Union bombardment of Baton Rouge, meetings with neighbors regarding Union soldiers in the area, and his refusal to sign an oath of allegiance. He mentions Union and Confederate officers in the region, including Lieutenant Grimstead and the 21st Indiana Infantry regiment. Elder also refers to church attendance, weather conditions, and planting and selling crops. Includes list of items taken or destroyed by Union soldiers. Mss. 4353.

Opinion in the case of the brig Josefa Segunda, 1832 Jan. 4. 1 manuscript. Location: Misc. The Spanish slave brig Josefa Segunda was seized in the Mississippi River by custom house officers and taken to New Orleans. The District Court of Louisiana condemned the brig and the slaves and effects found on board to the United States in violation of the constitutional prohibition against the international slave trade. This manuscript draft of a court opinion concerns claims made on the proceeds from the sale of the brig Josefa Segunda and the slaves on board. Mss. 3921.
