Nicholas John Sandlin served in the Eighth Louisiana Infantry Regiment, married Irene McIntyre after the war, and was father to John N. Sandlin, U.S. Representative for the Fourth Congressional District of Louisiana. Sandlin writes to his uncle, Calvin Leary, describing campaigns and camp life in Virginia during the Civil War. A blank contract with Victor Marziou & Co. of Paris gives the terms, conditions, provisions, and cost for German passengers and crew for a voyage from Havre to either New York or New Orleans in the 1850s. A list of those reporting in Bavaria intending to sail with Strecker, Klein & Stoeck between April 1852 and April 1853 gives the name, town, and country of the applicant; the ages and number in the family; the name and residence of the agent; and the sum due from the applicant for passage. Box was born in Quitman, Mississippi, in 1920 and graduated from LSU in 1942, where he played both baseball and football. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, earning the Distinguished Service Cross shortly before his death in 1943. The scrapbook contains mostly newspaper clippings and letters written to Earle Hubert Wagley following Box's death. Mss. 4181.
