He served under General Benjamin Franklin Butler before he began drilling at camps Kearney and Stearns in the Reserve Brigade, under Brigadier General Godfrey Weitzel. Letters describe Nickerson's experiences at the Custom House, and in military training in Camp Kearney and Camp Stearns. Morgan, Thomas Gibbes, Jr., 1837-1864. Letters, 1863. 2 items. Location: Misc:M. Confederate captain in the 7th Louisiana Infantry. Enlisted June 1861 at Camp Moore; was captured; November 1863; and died in Johnson's Island Prison, Ohio, January 1864. Morgan's letters were written to his cousin, Morris Barker Morgan of Providence, Rhode Island, from Old Capitol Prison, Washington D.C., and Johnson's Island Prison. Letters relate Morgan's need for money and clothing, his desire to see his wife and children, pessimism about the release of prisoners, and appreciation for the help of his Northern relatives. He enlisted as a private (1862) in the 114th New York Volunteers and served in several Louisiana campaigns. Early correspondence (1862-1863) and two diary entries describe Merritt's voyage from Fortress Monroe, Virginia, to Ship Island, Mississippi. 1864 letters describe military activities and several months spent in a hospital. 1865 letters relates the loss of men in his Company.
